This book has great info on planning trip to Vancouver and Whistler and now after reading about victoria, think I should add tht to the trip.

All of these streetwise maps are great. They focus on the downtowns of major cities- just where you probably are when you are walking around and need a quick reference. The size is perfect, and the plastic coating makes them extremely durable. I was in Montreal for over a month and had three local people ask me where I got the map - twice when I pulled it out on the Metro to review where I was going once I got off, once just on the street. As one person told me: "It doesn't look like a tourist map, I'd like one. Where did you get it?" The same thing happened twice in Paris last year with that map. Highly recommend!

I read this book on the heels of Chris Rose's "1 Dead in Attic: After Katrina." Chris Rose mentions this book toward the end of his, and I thought reading a positive story would be a good balance after reading the details of post-Katrina New Orleans. The story of 9/11 and the people of Gander, Newfoundland is fascinating and uplifting, but the book itself is poorly written. Perhaps it is because the author is a reporter, but the emotional impact that should have been there just wasn't. The sentence structure and word choices made me think I was reading an elementary school student's report on what happened rather than a professional's rendition. Went to Montreal for the first time in August 2008. This guide does a great job of letting you know about activities off the beaten path. For example, every Sunday in the summer there is a drum jam by the University in a park by the hill (it's called the tam tam jam). It's like Woodstock and totally made the trip for me. No other guide book discussed it, but this one did.

We started using Frommer's guides over 20 years ago and continue to be extremely pleased with them! We like to research places we go before we leave home and these guides make that job so much easier! They have always proven very valuable and well worth their cost. This Frommer's guide on Montreal and Quebec is as terrific as I expected it to be.

I really like these "Top 10" pocket guidebooks. They provide a lot of information and, best of all, fit nicely into my back pocket. [A trait that few other "pocket" guidebooks ever seem to achieve.]

However, this particular Top 10 guidebook -- Montreal and Quebec City -- only gets four stars because of various odd omissions.

There's no map of the Montreal Metro. Why not?

Although the book covers both Montreal and Quebec City, it neglects to provide information on how to get from one to the other. Is there a train? If so, how often does it run? How much does it cost? How long does it take? Are there busses? How long to drive from one city to the other by car? All this should have been described in detail. ... Read More:

Written in lively, attractive English, this guide has everything one expects from it: background information on the place, clear division into thematic chapters, cross-references between individual sections, reference guide at the end , and - what is of utmost importance - up-to-date information on what Vancouver has to offer - from arts festivals to skiing clinics. I just got back from a trip to Toronto and I found this book incredibly helpful. I bought it mainly for the restaurant and shopping chapters (which were great) but the best parts were the walking tours. There are three days of complete itineraries plus several walking tours of different neighborhoods, and they were so interesting that I ended up spending most of my trip following them. I feel like I really saw the city, not just the touristy highlights. Some of the places I wouldn't have found on my own, and others, like the University of Toronto Campus, I wouldn't have thought of visiting (there are two art galleries on the campus though so it's definitely worth a visit).
