. 101 Things I Learned in Architecture School
City Travel Guides > Books > Archaeology
by: Matthew Frederick
September 30, 2007
This is a cute little book. I wouldn't recommend it for students, because they should be learning most of the content of this book. If you are not being taught this stuff then you are not in your architecture library enough and your professors should be teaching better. Still if you get a chance to peruse it in the bookstore and like it, then go ahead. You should probably be purchasing Architecture: Form, Space and Order by Francis D K Ching, or another of his books.
This book is more for the out of touch architects, who have been doing complicated geometries for absurd reasons or the ones who want to do complicated geometries for absurd reasons. This book is like the 5-minute university concept. It brings you back down to earth ... Read More:

. Images of the Past
City Travel Guides > Books > Archaeology
by: T. Douglas Price, Gary Feinman
November 15, 2006
This is a wonderful book on archaeology from a world wide perspective. Techniques and time periods are well illustrated with examples taken from work done all over the world. Some of the most famous archeological sites are discussed: Olduvai, Zhoukoudien, Sanidar Cave, Jericho, Cahokia, Teotihuacan, Tikal, Moche, Cuzco, Uruk, Giza, An-Yang, Great Zimbabwe, Knossos, and others possibly more familiar to those with other areas of archaeological interest. This would make a lovely addition to the library of those who have more specialized interests but who want to know more about other areas or who enjoy learning new things about archaeology itself. It's definitely a book I'll re-read, and I don't generally do that.

. Art of the Andes: From Chavin to Inca (World of Art)
City Travel Guides > Books > Archaeology
by: Rebecca Stone-Miller
2002-09
This book stands out, among many others, for the quality of insight that Rebecca Stone-Miller brings to her study of Andean art. Not content with simple typology and iconography, her account is illuminated by the cultural constants - "duality, reciprocity, hierarchy, and embeddedness in nature" (p. 218) that she finds in the underlying Andean cultures. Art history, in these terms, becomes an exploration of meaning, both of the art that is produced and of the culture that produces it. It's rare to find so much insight in an introductory book; I highly recommend it. Another strength of the book is the nicely-judged balance of attention that the author pays to the multitude of cultures (including the Chavin, Nasca, Moche, Wari, Tiwanaku, Chimu, ... Read More:

. In Small Things Forgotten: An Archaeology of Early American Life
City Travel Guides > Books > Archaeology
by: James Deetz
August 01, 1996
I enjoyed Deetz' newly updated introduction to Historical Archaeology in America. He makes clear that much can be gleaned from the seemingly insignificant material things that are left behind in the process of living. I greatly enjoyed his putting the pieces of the puzzles together. Sometimes the result was an interesting surprise. For instance, I didn't know that porches, which became so popular in America, were not a feature of European houses and were introduced by Africans. "Shotgun houses" also have African roots. Another surprising story is told by the changing styles of Colonial gravestones. They change subtly as the religious climate changes. The oldest being very stiff and stern and later ones becoming more decorative, replacing deaths heads with angels. ... Read More:
