I enjoyed reading this book because the language is simple. It is not techinical but straight to basics. It demonstrates perceptions we have that chilren owe us as parents. Traumatized children have a different thought process. It validates the behavior and demonstatrates clear ways of thinking and processing so that the child as well as parent feel safe to rebuild a relationship/trust that was lost. The reader must be open to the process of thinking in a different manner. The techniques take time but the process helps to ease our fears as well as the child's. What a great tool this book has been. It helped us make a break through with our second daughter who we had been struggling with for over a year. We had been working hard with all of her indivual issues in isolation. We worked with her language delays, her behavorial problems, her sleep issues, sibling struggles and more. This his book helped with the big picture and helped make all that all that other work come together in a way that really helped our whole family.

This book as all books should be read and used as you feel it fits into your family. I loved it all and couldn't put it down. The author is realistic. Don't let this book convince you not to adopt and toddler. Use this wonderful book to consider carefully, learn about possibilities, and enter your adoption process fully aware. I think this book should be required reading before even thinking of adopting a toddler. The author is thoughtful and presents her points without emotional fluff. A great read.

This book is why adoptees are seen by the public as "troubled". Not all of us feel the so-called "Primal Wound", and I for one, am insulted by almost every sentence in it.

My birth mother thinks this book and its author are akin to the second coming, but I say, why not think for yourself? You don't need a book (and a poor one at that) to tell you how you feel.

Jeff Gammage speaks of his newly adopted daughters with an honest clarity and loyal devotion. Refreshing and insighful testimony from a father's perspective on falling in love with parenthood. With extensive research and historical facts on Chinese history and culture throughout the book, it is a must read for every new parent waiting to adopt from China! As a mother to 7 children, 5 through foreign adoption, and an adoption website owner, and moderator of a military adoption support group, I found Jeff Gammage's book to be a light of hope and truth for the orphan child.

Throughout this book there is an assumption that the "hurt" child is one whose biological parent(s) have abused and/or neglected their child. In far too many cases the child becomes "hurt" because overzealous child protection authorities have removed the child from it's biological parent(s)or primary care giver since birth.
