I have four children one of them a very rebellious teenage girl. A friend of mine recommended this book to me and I'm so glad I ordered it right away. It has helped me see the mistakes I've been making like repeating myself to her, and doing too much for her that she can do herself. It has given me tools to help get through to all my children. I've finally taken my parental power back where it belongs! It's work but well worth it! I've highly recommended this book to friends and family!

The book is simplistic and preachy. More often than not, you're reading three pages about something that can be clearly stated in a paragraph. Equally often, that material seems misplaced (waiting until the sixth month to speculate about gender???) and thrown in there to thicken the book. I believe, with common-sense editing, this book could be less than fifty pages without sacrificing any content. The few things that I did learn I could have learned from several other books, along with a great deal more.

I'm not a big book reader so of course I was the last person in my group of friends to read A Child Called It. Having heard so many good things about the book, I had really high hopes for it and fortunately I found it be so good that I read it straight through in a couple of hours.

So what's the book about? A Child Called it is an autobiographical account of a young boy named Dave and his horrible childhood. At first, Dave's family seemed perfect. His mother was doting and a perfect housewife. His dad was a firefighter. He had two brothers and the lot of them would go on wonderful family vacations. The author is wonderfully expresses his pain about his loving son. I also have a daughter the same age whose drug of choice is heroin. The book opened my eyes to go to Hazeleden to joint the parents program and to go to Al-Anon.
In short I thank the author so much for being an inspiration to me.

Too many people know Mystery's Method, so it is becoming overused. Every girl has now been asked the same dumb questions by guys "Did you see that fight outside?" etc. I just wish there was some new material.

A personal story of the relationship between a father and his son. This story personifies what a father/son relationship should be. The values of the father handed down to the son serve to bring that son into manhood and establish his outlook on life, his ethics and moreover his treatment of this fellow man. An excellent book and a must read for every father/son relationship.

I thought this book was just OK. Much of the information was good and I will use it in our home. However, the examples they used in this book were outrageous. Who in this day and age is going to let their kid off to walk home. Also, allowing a child to determine whether they go to school or not is silly.

Good message, good examples, well-written, easy-to-read.

Do I give 5 stars for everything I read? No- actually- I can think of another book on raising boys that I read that was pretty weak.

But this is written by a woman who knows what she's talking about (she is a doctor who works with kids and sees their interactions with their parents). All of her points that are opinion are supported by examples from her work. All of her points that are factual are well-referenced.

In other words, she's not just saying what she thinks and what she's observed. She spent a good bit of time researching this material.

With a toddler and a newborn it's hard to find time to read anything. This book was such an easy read. The cartoons are a great help because it's simple. I borrowed this from the library but owning one is a must so that I can refer back to it whenever I need to.

loved this book. my son is also bi-racial. i was born in 1956 and could really relate and re-read the book with my son. he never experienced most of the things in the book so it was an incredible sharing and bonding experience for us and it opened a whole new dialogue with his dad who's family originated in north carolina. great read for all parents and children. truly enlightening
