This is an excellent rework of the ancient story of Icarus and Daedalus. There is very little science in this; but after introducing them to the old tale, mixing in some Einstein and special relativity, then reading about the new Icarus, my 7th grade science class was amazed.

Greene does a great job and the illustrations are beautiful. Suitable for small children too.

Highly recommended.

This guy is freaking nuts. Although he synthesizes a great deal of information in his book, most of his conclusions do not logically follow from the data collected. Even if you believe what he's shoveling up until the chapter on UFOs and Aliens, once you get there, it is pretty hard to believe if you have half a brain.

Conspiracy theories will live on forever, and those who believe what this guy thinks are the reason for this longevity. I really can't believe that a person as old as he was could be so ignorant. He infers that people who don't swallow his stories are the ignorant ones, but what has the knowledge of any of this gotten anybody? NOTHING! Highly technical, but ultimately well worth the purchase price... however, it raises a host of new questions regarding NASA's TRUE purposes behind missions to both the moon and Mars.

Obviously thoroughly researched, this book is quite frankly critical of NASA, and will surely create doubts in the minds of readers concerning the nearly-sacred status of that agency. NOT light reading!!

I felt like there wasn't enough information in Hawking's explanations to really understand the concepts. So many times the fragments of information provided left me with a vague idea and a lot of questions.

For instance, Hawking writes "a matter particle, such as an electron or a quark, emits a force-carrying particle. The recoil from this emission changes the velocity of the matter particle. The force-carrying particle then collides with another matter particle and is absorbed. This collision changes the velocity of the second particle, just as if there had been a force between the two matter particles." I am a layman who has been curious about the concept of Sting Theory for some time. I found Greene's book a window into the soul of the universe. He has helped me comprehend (to my limits) the fabric of the cosmos. I echo the other rave reviews and will go back to this book time and time again.

Don't know much about new physics? This is stuff I didn't get the first time around--they weren't discussing it back then since all of us were running from the dinosaurs....

Anyway, Greene has a good descriptive edge that will keep you reading even if the subject of string theory and quantum physics gets a little too deep. Even if you've had physics 1 and 2 in college, I guarantee that those basic classes won't cover anything mentioned here, but you'll better have the mindset to take in this information.

Good luck! And remember that a college education is never a waste--if you really think how to use it well. A science background will certainly make you a better television series writer.

An absolutely wonderful book; however, the numerous printing imperfections encountered (odd smudges, smears, and stains) have significantly detracted from the reading experience.
The book states that it was printed in China and it shows--really bad for a new book.
Perhaps whoever printed the book thought that one would be reading it mainly in the dark and would not notice the blemishes.
A five-star rating for content and 0-stars for print quality equals 3 stars total (more of less).
