I purchase, Wesley the Owl, initially for my 12 year old who has a tremendous interest in becoming a zoologist or biologist. He was finishing up one of his other books so I read, Wesley the Owl, first. It is a fascinating account of the life of a barn owl. The behaviors, love and loyalty toward his young caretaker are remarkable and I couldn't put

I casually bought this book assuming it was based on science...what a mistake!!! The author uses terms such as "energy" in the loosest and most irresponsible way...He draws lines where in reality there are none, in order to equate "wave" and "quantum" energy to mean the "healing energy" in some alternative medicine therapies. He further equates quantum physics to "mysterious" and "unexplained" paranormal phenomena...not to mention debunked and unverified phenomena! But the efficacy of alternative healing is not even questioned in this book-it is presented as effective and unresearched. The author expects the reader to make a leap of faith-if you accept quantum physics, then you must also accept alternative healing- based soley on the misuse of terms. ... Read More:

What struck me most while reading this book was discovering along with the writer how little I know about where my food comes from, how it reaches me and what has been done to it along the way. Very rewarding were Pollan's sense of curiosity, courage, determination and integrity in looking at the truth of industrialized food, to pulling the trigger in the forest, hauling hay, standing knee-deep in excrement with "534", and firing up the grill for the sake of having an authentic knowledge, not just a label with a barcode. And it started to bother me that I really had no idea where my (extremely important and life-sustaining) food had come from or how much coordinated effort it took to get it to me.

I'm not sure if Taylor's editor had her dumb down her writing, if she chose to do so, or if, forgive me, her recovery was not as complete as she believes. Having had significant brain injury myself, I don't mean to ridicule her about that possibility, but either way, her writing is still simple. Yes, the content was compelling. Many books can say the same, but without good prose, no such book is worth reading. After all, once we were told what a neuroanatomist is, the "brain scientist" thing was insulting. There are many better recovery books. Here the concept was good; the execution was not.

I first listened to this book on my audible download and was so impressed I ordered a copy for myself and two copies to share with the counselors that I supervise. I also have been recommending it to a lot of the parents whose children are my clients. I work for children's services in Mental Health. This stuff is exciting.

This book is well written. It describes how probability theory impacts on everyday life. The writing style blends in historical references with real life examples. This makes it interesting to read. Its concepts are similar to the book Innumeracy but I found this book more interesting to read because of the historical aspects.
