. The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
City Travel Guides > Books > Earth Sciences
by: Michael Pollan
August 28, 2007
I went into this book with the expectation it would shove a bunch of ideals down my throat, and try to turn me into a vegan. This couldn't be further from the truth. From the very start of The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan simply presents the facts (and his own experiences) and leaves the rest up to you. But even more, he does this with clear, compelling, intelligent writing that truly opens your eyes and makes even the most mundane science about corn more interesting than you could ever imagine. His conclusions are interspersed with fascinating stories about his experiences at farms throughout the country. And his facts are clearly presented and supported by reliable sources and impressive research. No matter how you look at food (or even ... Read More:

. Green Goes with Everything: Simple Steps to a Healthier Life and a Cleaner Planet
City Travel Guides > Books > Earth Sciences
by: Sloan Barnett
September 23, 2008
"Most Americans, but especially children, have dozens of pesticides and other toxic compounds in their bodies, many of them linked to health threads. A source of many of these toxins? Common, everyday, run of the mill household consumer products. There's no polite way of saying this: your body is a landfill, a dumping ground for a mind-boggling array of toxic chemicals. So is mine. So is your child's..." Sloan Barnett writes. She continues to discuss other potential household toxins and simple steps that everyone can take to a healthier life and a cleaner planet.
"Green Goes with Everything" is divided into ten chapters, including: The Real Dirt on Clean, Scary Clean, Safe Clean, Clean Body, Clean Baby, Clean Food, Clean Water, Clean Water, Clean ... Read More:

. The World Without Us
City Travel Guides > Books > Earth Sciences
by: Alan Weisman
August 05, 2008
Alan Weisman's book is an extension of a previous essay article, and unfortunately, that is how it often reads. The chapters (and sections within chapters) jump from subject to subject and through different time lines without real feeling for order or reason. The statements he makes are backed up by well researched evidence and via discussion with some very interesting characters but sometimes, one gets lost in trying to figure out what the point is of each section, rather than go with the flow.
However, he does make some very interesting and important points in regards to human impact and the fact that there are large numbers of species and populations that will not even notice that we are gone. He does also point out the fact that some of our inventions are likely to ... Read More:

. The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl
City Travel Guides > Books > Earth Sciences
by: Timothy Egan
September 01, 2006
Hurricanes come and go along America's Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. Property and lives are destroyed, but often rebuilt. There's some comfort in knowing that indefatigable Mother Nature caused the damage.
But in the plains and panhandles of Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, an unprecented and unyielding natural disaster, rooted in the uprooting of native grasses in the name of progress, blew dirt into peoples' lives for almost the full decade of the '30s, killing thousands, ruining countless businesses, and emptying towns. It came to be known as the Dust Bowl, and Timothy Egan's book "The Worst Hard Times" tells the story via the recollections of a few octa- and nonagenarians who were there and lived through it.
Egan's narratives built around these recollections ... Read More:

. The Prize : The Epic Quest for Oil, Money & Power
City Travel Guides > Books > Earth Sciences
by: Daniel Yergin
January 01, 1993
The Prize is a feast of a book. It is one of my all time favorites, including novels, biographies and the lot. Daniel Yergin, the author, makes a very exciting plot of the history of the oil business, starting in Pennsylvania in 1859.
The best parts, both analytical and epical, is where he writes about the upstream part of the oil business, ie. exploring, finding and producing crude. The story takes us from Pennsylvania, to Texas, Indonesia, Russia, Venezuela, Mexico, Persia, Kuwait and Saudi-Arabia to Alaska.
Yergins main thesis is that oil became a strategic commodity around 1900. Nations and governments want control over crude, because they are unable to conduct wars without it. Therefore they are willing to go to war to secure oil supplies, and availability of oil determined to a ... Read More:
