This book is worth every bit of praise it gets. Frank Miller created a masterpiece with this work. And even a die-hard Marvel fan that I am came to appreciate the Dark Knight through this book. The book itself is almost a legend among comics, but don't buy it for that. Buy it for the story and the insidious art that doesn't have much appeal at first, but by the end you can't picture the story being told in any other style. At least I can't.

Frank Miller did something special with this. He gave Batman such a blistering air of realism and depth that the character was changed forever. This work is something any comic fan should read to call themselves a comic fan. It has stood the test of time and is still on the top of the pile.

You must buy it for the artwork. It the most beautiful artwork I ever seen in a Batman book. I read a review here saying the recoloring in this book is bad. This reviewer is so wrong. Recoloring this book is the best thing that ever happened! I literally compare the original with this book side by side before I made the purchase and it is night and day! In this book, Brian Bolland, joins among the great Batman artists such as Jim Lee and Neal Adams. Spectacular artwork, extremely clean and sharp with rich colors. The story on the other hand, I do not appreciate as much as other people may have, because while it gives the Joker some background as to how and why he became the Joker, I'm not sure that I would want to know since it is the mystery ... Batman: Year One was the first Batman graphic novel I read. It remains my favorite and has sparked me to read other Batman graphic novels.

For anyone new to graphic novels or comics, Batman: Year One is a great place to start. It is fairly brief and quick to read. Frank Miller's writing is engrossing and powerful, yet remains simple and accessible. David Mazzucchelli's artwork isn't overly detailed but possesses substance and the dull colors give the drawings an old-fashioned look. The use of colors, light, and shadows is outstanding and really captures the mood of each frame.

This is a very popular graphic novel as it is first in the Halloween series that attempts to continue what Miller left off in Year One. These stories chronicle the early years of Batman as more of a detective than a superhero fighting crime. He fights crime as well in this book and battles pretty much all the popular villains such as Joker, Riddler, and Two-face. This book also includes the famous story of Dent's transformation to Two-face. If you like a lot of plot twists and turns, very typical of crime mysteries, then you will enjoy this book. I'm not too big on such complicated plots and like a more focused straight-forward, although witty plot. It is really not a continuation per-se but another murder mystery very similar to Holiday killer in The Long Halloween but just picks up the story where it left off. What made this book more interesting was the origin of Robin which is a lot more interesting than Harvey Dent's backstory and arguably more interesting than Bruce Wayne's history! In this book, Robin actually makes himself useful as he would have to in order to convince Batman to take him in as a partner. There are some new, refreshing villains in this book such as Penguin and Mr Freeze! A better read than the previous book in my opinion.

After delving back into comics and graphic novels from a 15 year hiatus, I embarked on a quest to find books that would suit a mature reader in his 20s and lo and behold this is such a book! I had read the overwhelmingly positive reviews left for "Preludes and Nocturnes" and decide to give it a go, and boy am I glad I did! I have to say when I opened the book initially I was a bit put off by the art style but after going through the first two issues in the book I began to appreciate the beauty of the style because it suits the story so well.

Neil Gaiman's Sandman is a comic book + Literary genius + Great artwork + Stories from all over the world + much more. The absolute edition has new stories that were never before published. It's a visual and mental treat. If you are ever wondering whether to buy the TPB's or the absolute edition, I would suggest the Absolute edition - as all the original 75 stories from Sandman are collected in dust cover 4 volumes vs 12 TPB's. So price-wise it doesn't make a big difference. I have read this 3 times in the last 10 years and every time there is something new that I find. I ordered both the Dark Knight Returns and the Dark Knight Strikes Again at the same time and my excitement at reading them was bursting through the roof. I read DKR first and I was blown away I loved the story and character interpretation, it was amazing. Then I got around to reading DKSA and the first couple of pages were great I thought it would only get better, it did story wise but the artwork couldn't compare to DKR because it got a little sloppier and rushed it seemed, but I still throughly enjoyed the story, even though I thought it focused more on other super heroes than Batman i.e. Superman and Wonderwoman. This book took us further into the mythos of who The Sandman is and how at different times he's affected history. A few of the stories do not directly feature The Sandman but they are very fine stories anyway.

The stories are emotional. The artwork is moody and reflect the stories emotional impact perfectly.

I highly recommend this entire series.
