. The Daring Book for Girls
City Travel Guides > Books > Hiking and Camping
by: Andrea J. Buchanan, Miriam Peskowitz
October 30, 2007
I bought this for my g'daughter's 11th birthday. At first she was busy playing with toys she rec'd that day, but then realized later that evening that the book is full of fun things to do, new things to try, and facts that realy interest girls her age. The next day she spent an hour trying to perfect the karate moves illustrated in the book.
It's a great way to stimulate a girl's mind while also getting her to try things she might otherwise be timid about.
I bought the Dangerous Book for Boys, too, but won't give it to my g'son until his birthday in a few weeks.

. A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail
City Travel Guides > Books > Hiking and Camping
by: Bill Bryson
December 26, 2006
Some things we never seem to learn, like judging a book by its cover. In this instance, the cover of "A Walk In The Woods" looks inviting enough, even exciting, with the picture of a bear staring you down.
False advertising.
If "A Walk In The Woods" had been a TV show, it would have been named Seinfeld, but without the humor, because it is truly a book about nothing. Two guys decide to walk the Appalachian Train for different reasons. However, they don't actually hike together, they don't meet a lot of compelling other people and they never see a bear, or a bobcat either. Huh?
Instead, the reader is subjected to lengthy prose about the stark glories and occasional majesty of the AT, the shelter accommodations ... Read More:

. Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why
City Travel Guides > Books > Hiking and Camping
by: Laurence Gonzales
October 30, 2004
There are clearly two ways to approach this book - one for the great stories, the other for the mindset of the people in the stories.
Personally, I found the conversation about how our minds work to be the most compelling . The idea of a plan as a "memory of the future" is a line that sticks with me.
In my work as an NLP practitioner I know that we create pictures and stories in our minds that determine what our experience of the world will be. After a dramatic experience, we decide (unconsciously) what that experience means to us. We translate each decision into behavior, without even realizing it. And our behavior determines our final outcome. In our regular lives, it may be whether we get the new job, or whether we succeed or ... Read More:

. Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog
City Travel Guides > Books > Hiking and Camping
by: Ted Kerasote
April 21, 2008
As an avid reader of 40+ years, I can honestly say that this is the only book I ever began re-reading the day after I finished it. It manages to be entertaining, intelligently crafted, well researched, thought-provoking and emotionally engaging all at once. I purchased 6 additional copies for friends and favorite dog care professionals, as I couldn't wait to share this book. In this book you get a unique window into the evolution of Ted and Merle's relationship through what seems to be both Ted and Merle's eyes. Ted and Merle's relationship is mutually respectful, emotionally intelligent and loving in a way that would put most human relationships to shame. They seem to truly be able to communicate and share their love of the outdoors in a way that most ... Read More:

. US Army Survival Manual: FM 21-76
City Travel Guides > Books > Hiking and Camping
by: Department of Defense
1970-10
Survival is a skill, and one you need to work on, you can have all the books in the world but unless your actually go out and try these things it's nothing but a collection of paper.
that being said this is an excellent source of information that you can use to attempt trapping food (Please check that it's legal in your area and remember where you placed all your traps as well as make sure you take them down after you have proven they work.) making camps and fire, cooking and eating and so forth.
hopefully you will never NEED This book, but if you do i hope you made the right choice and bought it.
