I gave this to my 50 year old brother-in-law and ended up reading most of it before I would wrap it.

It brings back memories and makes you think of memories you'll be creating in the future.

I bought this for my g'daughter's 11th birthday. At first she was busy playing with toys she rec'd that day, but then realized later that evening that the book is full of fun things to do, new things to try, and facts that realy interest girls her age. The next day she spent an hour trying to perfect the karate moves illustrated in the book.

It's a great way to stimulate a girl's mind while also getting her to try things she might otherwise be timid about.

I bought the Dangerous Book for Boys, too, but won't give it to my g'son until his birthday in a few weeks.

Some things we never seem to learn, like judging a book by its cover. In this instance, the cover of "A Walk In The Woods" looks inviting enough, even exciting, with the picture of a bear staring you down.

False advertising.

If "A Walk In The Woods" had been a TV show, it would have been named Seinfeld, but without the humor, because it is truly a book about nothing. Two guys decide to walk the Appalachian Train for different reasons. However, they don't actually hike together, they don't meet a lot of compelling other people and they never see a bear, or a bobcat either. Huh?

There are clearly two ways to approach this book - one for the great stories, the other for the mindset of the people in the stories.

This book is great. It tells you basic needs for survival like how to find water, make shelter and purify water. It is just a great book. If you frequently travel to different places like jungles or forests and you want to know how to survive in the wild if you get lost, this is a good book to get.

Survival is a skill, and one you need to work on, you can have all the books in the world but unless your actually go out and try these things it's nothing but a collection of paper.

that being said this is an excellent source of information that you can use to attempt trapping food (Please check that it's legal in your area and remember where you placed all your traps as well as make sure you take them down after you have proven they work.) making camps and fire, cooking and eating and so forth.

hopefully you will never NEED This book, but if you do i hope you made the right choice and bought it.

Awesome purchase. This book's a keeper. It goes straight to the point and tells you what you need to know and do, if ever caught in a survival situation.

One downside of the book, in my opinion, is that it does not go into a lot of detail regarding survival situations in environments other than hot deserts and cold temperate areas. The survival kit components that are featured in the book attest to that fact.

But overall I love the book because it gives you knowledge you can begin to use immediately.

Overall, I think this is a great book. The authors are experienced and let you know if what they are saying is something they read as opposed to something they are claiming to know or have experienced by combining information from everyone (including themselves) or every book they have read. They also point out when and in what types of situations you need to be extra careful. There are important things to be reminded of when practicing these skill and we can sometimes forget we are all still subject to nature. For example, exploding rocks and food poisoning as well as foraging for plants and being certain of what you are eating.
