. Egypt (Eyewitness Travel Guides)

This is a great first book to begin an understanding of Egypt before travel. It covers all major areas in extensive detail; provides suggestions for the best places to visit while in the country; detail pictures of what to look for at various sites;and the last section on travel tips I found invaluable. It is current (2008 ed) and I especially like the size of the book, which can be tucked into a carry-on bag or a back-pack while touring and doesn't weigh a ton. "Don't leave home without it!"

. Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Capetown
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Paul Theroux
April 05, 2004
I read this a chapter or two chapter at a time over a period of 2 months. It is a book to savor. There are not many books I read again, but this one is on my list.
This is a difficult journey and Theroux, traveling alone, might not have emerged from it alive. His advantages were years of travel and previous aquaintance with the continent.
The most interesting vignettes were his visit with Mahfouz in Egypt, the boat trip across Lake Victoria, entering any country, visiting friends from his former school, and the descriptions of the situations in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Theroux shares his strong opinion about the role of aid in Africa. It does seem that the aid is misdirected. The attitude, "I am poor because ... Read More:

. Tanzania (Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Mary Fitzpatrick

This is one of the worst editions of Lonely Planet books I've ever read.
The book is full of factual errors which probably is a result of poor research. I doubt that the researcher actually have been at some of the places, and that he has copied information from the Internet instead.
I traveled this summer in Tanzania, and ran into errors in this guidebook time and again. The Rough Guide was far more accurate, even though that book is two years older.
I can accept that phone numbers are wrong, given the constantly expansion and changes in the Tanzanian mobile phone system, but addresses should be right most of the time.
Further more, I can accept that travel times can't be relied upon as accurate in Africa, but if ... Read More:

. Morocco (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: DK Publishing
September 06, 2004
Though many swear by the LP guides, my Eyewitness guide did me well during my recent 10 day excursion through Marrakesh, Fes, and Casablanca. It's not so great for finding hotels and restaurants, as well as many "big picture" details (like where to find walking tours, etc.), but the history sections at the beginning of the guide were incredibly informative and helped me understand the culture and background of the people before I went, and the pictures (both photos and illustrations) and descriptions of the sites are great. Especially important since in Morocco, if there's a non-Arabic description of anything, it's typically only in French. Finally, it's a good keepsake at the end of the trip... a great collection of photos of the sights in case you weren't able to take ... Read More:
