This is a great first book to begin an understanding of Egypt before travel. It covers all major areas in extensive detail; provides suggestions for the best places to visit while in the country; detail pictures of what to look for at various sites;and the last section on travel tips I found invaluable. It is current (2008 ed) and I especially like the size of the book, which can be tucked into a carry-on bag or a back-pack while touring and doesn't weigh a ton. "Don't leave home without it!"

I read this book because I enjoyed another book, Whoredom in Kimmage, by the same author. This one, though very different, is every bit as excellent. I have done business in several developing countries, including Egypt, and I found Mahoney extremely well informed. Her descriptions are surprisingly on the mark for a person who only spent a total of three months in the country. The book is full of history, detail, and fascinating information about the Egyptians and their culture. The writing is beautiful. It's also very colorful and funny. But for me, the most moving part of the book is the story that lies at its heart: the tender and mutually respectful friendship the author finds with a Nubian man who accepted her desire to row on the river ... This is not a guide book - it's not about places, good restaurants and value hotels.

This is about the people of Egypt, their history, their culture and how they think.

As such, it is a much more interesting read than any guide book.

I will refrain from giving a summary of the book, as a couple of other reviewers did a nice job of that previously. I will offer a few brief impressions of this work.

Having obtained a degree in African studies in the 1990s, I was well aware of the issues facing Sudan and the history of the civil wars in the country. Many times material I read about Africa is erroneous to some degree in its reporting of events. Bixler gets things right in "The Lost Boys of Sudan." Additionally, he does a nice job of weaving historical context into the story he tells of the young men from Sudan. Dr. Ghosh is a social anthropologist by training, and a gentle one at that. He is also a gifted writer and a masterful storyteller. At least that is the impression I have formed from reading this book.

The book is part travelogue, part history and part anthropology. These three themes have been interwoven carefully, much like the layers of a leavened bread. And then there are gems of insights, somewhat like raisins mixed in the bread. The effect is somewhat soulful, and leaves you wonderstruck, not just at the story he tells, but als the skill and craftmanship with which he tell it.

In addition to providing me with the basics of where to stay, where to go, etc. RG gave me all of the cultural/historical information I needed to have a deeper understanding of Egyptian culture and better enjoy my trip. The enhanced discussion of "baksheesh" was particularly useful!!
