I've been to French Polynesia using this LP. The guidebook was helpful (all places I've stayed in were found in LP). Contact information was correct and full. But somehow almost every emotion/opinion described in my LP never matched my own :) However, one would not invent a wheel by saying that French Polynesia is not a place where standard expectations for price/performance can be met.

An excellent general travel review of the Micronesian islands. There's so much to see and do in paradise, that it's hard to cover everything in one volume covering over thousands of islands (you can either count at high or low tide) and many, many square kilometers of pristine, and sometimes wild, open ocean. I enjoyed the layout, maps, food and drug choices,and listing some of the more signiciant sights, along with a touch of the local languages and customs. I recommend it for any traveller going through, especially if you ride on the Continental island hopper, and get off at each major airport for a 2-3 days visit. The book is also hardy and fits nicely in a packsack. Good job, Author Levy.

I went back and bought 2 more for my travel companions! We just came back from Truk & Yap and I never saw my book, it was traveling around our group so much! We are planning to return to Palau, so I bought extra copies as self defense! The best dive guide I have found to the islands.

I purchased this book as part of my preparation for a diving trip to Chuuk Lagoon. It contains many excellent colour photographs of wrecks, coral, artifacts and local inhabitants. I found the brief history that accompanies each of the wrecks featured especially interesting. Likewise the diagrams of some of the wrecks, along with their various inclinations on the lagoon floor is fascinating.

Invaluable for such a trip are the scale maps of the lagoon and islands which pinpoint the location of the wrecks and other major features/landmarks. Further, the book grades each of the featured sites using the Pisces Rating System for Dives & Divers and the Dive Site Icons, both of which I found gave an excellent feel for the dive.

"the second edition of Karolle's ATLAS OF MICRONESIA...is better produced than the first edition... The tragedy is that it could have been so much better with only a little more effort... The text cries out for good editing... With good editing the text probably could have been condensed by about a third... As in the first edition, the section on climate and weather comes long after that on physical geography, an anachronism that necessarily detracts from the understanding of intervening sections... No doubt interesting reading. Whether it's relevant... Well, yes, this could be great advice for those adventuring in the Pacific, but only with huge amounts of money which few of us have. Unless you have your own yacht(s) etc, you may be better off with one of the more 'conventional' travel guides.
