. Three Worlds Gone Mad: Dangerous Journeys through the War Zones of Africa, Asia, and the South Pacific
City Travel Guides > Books > Papua New Guinea
by: Robert Young Pelton
December 01, 2003
The author shows his personal travel iternary of failed states in Africa, Europe and Asia. They are Sierra Leone, Chechneya, and Bouganville (part of Papua New Guinea). I have traveled widely and even visited some of Pelton's own 100 dangerous places, but I don't think I would travel to these destinations. The author shows the terror of the RUF, and describes the mercenaries of Executive Outcomes. In Chechneya, he shows the terror of the scorthed earth policy of the Russians in their desire to conquer the breakaway province. In Bouganville, he shows how an out of touch government has taken liberties with a remote province. In all three, precious minerals are being exploited for the benefit of an elite. They are diamonds, oil, and copper. ... Read More:

. Encounters With the Dani
City Travel Guides > Books > Papua New Guinea
from: Steidl/International Center of Photography
October 02, 2003
I read this book and enjoyed it. Tobias is an off the books type of person, who is haphazardly entering upon territory in a why that is both remarkable but beyond the responsible range of any anthropologist. the other person reveiwing this book says that the Asmat regions are now civilized, so much the worse. there are traits common to the humanistic tradition which have thrived for millenia due to thier geografic remoteness, now the origins of our collective character is being usurped by values and judgements most purverse. Tobias was a man who belonged to a bygone era. one of color and mystisim. i rate this book highly for those who cant afford to bombard New guinea with thier tourisim and want a look at what things were like in a diffrent time ... . Cruising Guide to Southeast Asia, Vol. 1: South China Sea, Philippines, Gulf of Thailand to Singapore
City Travel Guides > Books > Papua New Guinea
by: Stephen Davies, Elaine Morgan
January 01, 1998
The reality is there is little information for this part of the world. This is good information, but its not great and it does lack in certain areas, I don't know of a better book so I'd reccomend it, but do lots of homework before you go the information changes quickly.

. New Guinea Ceremonies (Photography)
City Travel Guides > Books > Papua New Guinea
by: David Gillison
March 01, 2002
The photography in this book is spectacular. Gillison spent years getting to know the Gimi people of PNG and it shows in the photography. Subjects are casual and acting normally; you won't find photos like this by any photographer briefly (read less than a couple years) visiting PNG. This book is a window into the lives and ceremonies of PNG people that few outsiders are fortunate enough to see and even fewer talented photogaphers capture. This is not the standard travelogue with snapshots, The text is equally exceptional. Gillison obviously knows his subjects and writes crisply and to the point. The text matches the art for giving the reader an insight to the lives of Gimi people-- a group of people with fascinating traditions, ceremonies, ... Read More:
