. Rand McNally 2009 Road Atlas: United States / Canada / Mexico (Rand Mcnally Road Atlas: United States, Canada, Mexico)
City Travel Guides > Books > Canada
from: Rand McNally & Company
May 15, 2008
I have been collecting/using Rand McNally road atlases since the early '90s. They are consistently great atlases from year to year. Normally, I find the next year's atlas available in September, so I was very surprised to see the 2009 version available in May, 2008. When comparing the 2008 version to the 2009 version, it is clear that the 2009 version was released earlier than usual. There are very few updates that I noticed from one version to the next. Usually I can spot some updates from a mile away, so to speak. This time, I had to get both the 2008 and 2009 versions out and compare them side to side to notice any updates. The updates that were included, that I was finally able to find, were relatively minor, such as some construction areas ... Read More:

. Canoeing with the Cree
City Travel Guides > Books > Canada
by: Eric Sevareid
April 15, 2005
"Eric Sevareid made his name as a CBS news correspondent. But at a young age, Sevareid experienced an adventure most only dream of. Sevareid detailed the journey in his book "Canoeing with the Cree". Now to mark the 75th anniversary of Sevareid's journey, two Minnesota men plan to make the same trip." Tim Post
In 1930 two young men paddled their way from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay in Canada. A trip of 2200 miles. Everyone told them it could not be done. Eric Sevareid, then a 17 year old, fresh graduate of high school, and his best buddy, Walter Port, planned the entire trip. They garnered financial support, collected supplies and a canoe and paddles and off they went. Five months later after trials and tribulations, they made it to ... Read More:

. Mean and Lowly Things: Snakes, Science, and Survival in the Congo
City Travel Guides > Books > Canada
by: Kate Jackson
April 30, 2008
"To understand the world, we must understand mean and lowly things." - Aristotle
Kate Jackson recounts her expeditions with the flare of the best natural field scientists from Jane Goodall to Frank Buck - every bit as fascinating and courageous. Scientific exploration - hardships, danger, daring, mysteries, accomplishment, exotic cultural surprises. Including a glimpse into modern scientific camaraderie around the world and government bureaucratic malfeasance. Highly recommended glimpse of an intrepid person enjoying herself physically and intellectually.
"No person who is enthusiastic about his work has anything to fear from life." -Samuel Goldwyn

. Running in the Family
City Travel Guides > Books > Canada
by: Michael Ondaatje
November 30, 1993
Ondaatje seems to be trying too hard. The language is overly flowery and the plot is often lost beneath the mound of words. It does have a few good moments, some funny, some touching. But in general, I spent most of this book irritated by the grandois manner of the author, as if by writing in a vague and pretty-fied manner, his words will sound important and deep.
Maybe it's just me, but I find that vague does NOT equal meaningful.
