I bought this book for a trip I'm going on next week. While I have not used it 'in country' yet, I have traveled to many other places, using a Lonely Planet guide as my bible. I find them better than the competitor's guides primarily for their organization, and ease of finding the information you need, fast. The 'Sleeping' sections allow you to easily choose the best hotel option that fits you and your trip, and the 'Getting there & away' section not only tells you where transport is located, but the price, and importantly, the duration. Having this book in my hand next week will allow me to make easy, quick decisions, and concentrate on the most important thing - having fun.

I know this a "portable guide" to the Dominican Republic, but still it is extremely bare bones and basic. It includes a decent section on Santo Domingo but absolutely nothing on Santiago - the country's second largest city. The rest of this thin volume includes only a couple of short sections on the DR's tourist areas - the North Coast, Punta Cana and Boca Chica. To someone attempting to explore anywhere else in the DR this book is virtually useless. Even for my brief one week trip to Puerto Plata I found nothing in this guide that I had not already discovered on the Internet.

I am usually a fan of Frommer's guidebooks. But this one just doesn't cut it.

I ordered this book because I thought it would provide an introduction to the politics of the Dominican Republic. When I got it, it reminded me more of a mixture between a tacky guidebook and an elementary school social science book. It does present some insight into the historical, economical and political conditions of the country, some of them even differing from the mainstream image, but it is all very limited in scope and not very useful. If you want a guidebook, I'd suggest Lonely Planet a million times before this one. When it comes to a political review of the country, I have unfortunately had difficulties in finding one. But surfing the web for a couple of hours will certainly provide more useful information than a copy of this book.

The most glaring error I found on this map is misleading info about Santiago's airport, which must be at least ten years old. The map shows it just north of the city, whereas the airport is actually 15 miles or so to the southeast. Otherwise, the map is vague about road conditions. Dirt roads are not distinguished from paved. Many roads are omitted. There is no detailed map of Santo Domingo or Santiago, the D.R.'s two largest cities.

I bought this book, not as a travel guide, but as a "coffee-table book" about the country of Haiti. As such, it is FANTASTIC! Sure, there are some typos in this first edition, but the publisher specifically invites readers' contributions & corrections (p. 2) for future editions. The photos in this book are vivid, stunning depictions of life in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. We are active travelers who explore extensively; we seldom "stay put". We want lots of details and like many recommendations of "sights to see". This disappointing guide contains very basic info about the DR, but lacks depth. The photos are nice, but many of the photo subjects (named waterfalls, for example) do not appear in the index, so you cannot determine exactly where they are. The index is very poorly done; you cannot find "scuba diving" in the index, even though good scuba diving spots are described in the text. There are no highlights of the "Best of" the country's beaches, fishing, sights to see, or anything else. I loved the book. I am Dominican and I can say proudly that I know my history; that's why I think the author of "dead man in paradise" really did his homework in order to show the reader the Dominican culture and history, as sad as it was. Do not think he is exaggerating about the cruelty and oppression of those days; he is not.

By many expressions in the book, I can tell he is really identified with the Dominican People. I do not know how long it took for him to write the book, but I can tell it was quite some time. You could not get to know such a complicated history in details in a few months.

I hope this book someday is translated into Spanish and put in the bookstores of the Dominican Republic. We would hear a lot about it since ... Read More:

I found the book to be very helpful. When I travel I like to go and hang out with the locals and be a part of the scene and with this guide book I was able to do just that. This book is not only good for those like me but it also gives some great listings for the all inclusive resorts. I found that the author was very knowlegable of her families home land. I only wished I would have had more time to see other parts of the island. I stayed in
Santo Dominco and had a wonderful time. If you get a chance one should have dinner at Coco's Restaurant. I had a great time with the locals and the food was unbelievable.
