Before purchasing this book, I did a bit of research on the different guides available. One had a lot of advertisements, but was popular. It was more like a Frommers travel book. This one was written by the guy who actually used equipment relied upon by chartmakers for local depth soundings. You could tell by his "local" hints that he really took the time and effort to give you the insider's view. From recomming "Mr.Fantastic" (a local boat vendor who sold us delicious lobster), to recommendations on local restaurants at each of our island stops along the way, this book was fantastic. A very good book. Picked it up to check it out and was impressed at how comprehensive it is in regards to specific dives spots and charter outfits. I thought it was so useful that I am trying to find Volume 2.

The shoreside details may be outdated, but the craft of cruising these islands is timelessly preserved. Not many people cruise today without an engine, and only without an engine can you develop the kind of insights Mr. Street shares. If you don't appreciate his opinionated views on the island communities, you can't deny that he is a master sailor. The countless ranges he has documented guide one safely through the islands without fear of one's GPS receiver having a bad day. His challenge to find an anchorage where you can lie with 6' foot draft that he has not documented is in the finest tradition of sailing bluster. This is the guide that contains everything one needs for a vacation in Martinique. It gives details on activities ranging from free rum tastings to the volcano museum to Napoleon's Josephine to Gaugin, the painter. The guide is honest when rating attractions; only the most interesting are given three stars. I have looked at every guide to Martinique I could find, and this is the only one I would buy.

We had just returned from 2 weeks of sailing to various islands in the French West Indies and wanted to see more of St Bart's. This is the perfect book. The photos are beautiful and really portray the warmth and beauty of this lovely little island. We were looking for the answer to the the question of would we want to spend a few weeks there and the book lead us to conclude with a resounding yes. Any guests who see it on our coffee table cannot resisit.

My wife and I went to St. Lucia in April. We had prepared for our trip by reading all this book had to say about the island, which was very helpful in planning day trips, money exchange, restaurants, etc. We took the book with us and it was extremely helpful with maps when we drove around the island, and the different side trips off the main road. I would highly recommend it to any who are planning a trip to that area!

I bought this book because it was recently published, but the quality was terrible.
The book reads more like something from the tourist office than an objective guide and so it's hard to tell what things are really like. I get the impression that the author does not really know the islands very well.

I only went to Martinique, so I have only read half the book. But here are some things that surprised me:
There is no mention of the hot springs on the trail near Precheur, even though these are a splendidly unusual attraction.
The maps in the book are woefully feeble. A map with all the beaches and major attractions on it would be a great help to anyone planning a vacation.
