Our travel reading was limited to Frommer's, Moon, and Lonely Planet. After reading the reviews on this new source, we bit. I'm convinced the author's relatives must have provided the "positive" comments!

This guide might be helpful to the Jamaican backpacker who desires the "$8 a day experience." If your desire is the more upscale visit, we suggest your choice of guides from the tried and proven professionals listed above.

I grew up in Jamaica, but never really took advantage of the "tourist stuff" while there (who does that at home?). I found this book very helpful for sifting through all the many things the island had to offer and targeting the best (and most reasonably priced) restaurants, hotels, etc. on my last visit.

Only thing they missed, like most reviews, is the cultural differences across the island. Just like Arkansas and New York don't have the same culture, accent, terms, etc., the same is true of different regions in Jamaica.

We are planning a trip in November 2008 to Hedo III and we are currently researching everything we can so we "know " what to expect.
This book tells everything there is to know about the atmosphere, the people,the drinks, etc - It mainly talks about Hedo II but I imagine it is much the same- and it gives a great insight as to the kind of people we should expect to meet.
Great reading and interesting pictures too.
Definately worth the read before you go.

It seems apparent that some of the reviewers picked up this book with the misguided notion that they were going to read some wonderful account of their beloved Himalayas. Apparently you have no idea who Jamaica Kincaid is or what her writings are about, so if are upset because you have "been to the Himalayas and there are much better writings," it's because you've never read (or probably even heard about) "My Brother," "Lucy," or any other of her profound literary works. She is not a travel author, and although this work is set during her physical journey, it, like every other work of hers, is about the psychological, emotional, and social journeys we all make.

This was written about 4 or 5 years ago. Most phone numbers are out of date. I had a very bad experience when trying to use this guide book and hope you can find something better.

This book stood me in good stead when I visited Jamaica earlier this year. Typically of Lonely Planet's materials, however, I found this book to be of the most use in preparing for the trip. Whether I am different from other travelers or not, I like to come to a destination at least somewhat aware of the history, culture, geography, etc. There simply is no comparison between the background information you can quickly gain by perusing Lonely Planet's introductions to a country and that provided by other popular guidebooks. I felt well prepared to plan and understand my trip to Jamaica after reading this book.
