Reading this book has helped me understand why Prague has become a top tourist destination. Now I, too, want to explore the architecture, music, food, and history of what sounds like an amazing city. With this book I feel comfortable planning a visit, even without knowing a word of the language. Having used other of Rick Steves' books in the past, I trust him to steer me to enjoyable, safe, and affordable experiences.

As in all of his books, Steves states his approach to travel clearly: he doesn't cover everything, just the "best" places, the best according to him, of course. The map is convenient to use, and the lamination keeps it from getting destroyed from use. But it is relatively expensive considering you can get the same map in your tourist guide or for free from any one of a number of places once you get to Prague.

It's true what they say; the natives are more friendly when you make an effort!

I have purchased a variety of language guides for a number of languages (Czech, Italian, French, German), and I have always found the LonelyPlanet phrasebooks to be the best. Their size makes them very portable and discrete, they are very well organized, and have good, easy to use 2-way dictionaries for when you're in a pinch. They also don't take themselves too seriously, and include sometimes laughable - though potentially very useful - sections on things like clubbing, and "intimate" times. The guides claim to be "more essential than socks (and lighter on the nose)." I think this sums them up nicely.

I recently spent 4 days in Prague visitng a friend and decided to pick up this book right before I left. I am so glad I did! While I did have my friend with me to help me navigate the sights, I definitely could have done it all easily with this book. It is small and compact so it is easy to carry in a purse or pocket, and it is full of information and color photos, which I think help you understand and get your bearings when looking for something. It also includes a tear out map in the back of the book that has the metro lines on it, which are very useful and my recommendation for getting around the city. Great resource with great walking routes too (excellent directions!). When traveling I usually bring two, maybe three guide books. On this trip to Prague I brought two, and ended using this extensively, as the other book was found to be nothing more than extra weight to carry around the city.

Highly recommend this book, plus one other (not fodor's). The only minus of this book was the metro map. But other than that this book is seriously dog eared, written in, and cherised as a great memoir of my trip to Prauge.

Many of the customer reviews cite how helpful this book is for finding the key spots to visit. It also encapsulates key information you need for navigating the culture and environment. I agree with them on this.

However, because it is organized as a set of top ten lists, it seriously limits the way you get to understand a place. Prague has an incredible history which comes through more thorough texts such as Rick Steve's guide. So having a much more indepth guide is essential. DK's Eyewitness Guide to Prague does do a good job of this but I am not sure you want both books from the same source.
