Planning a brief trip to a country as varied and historic as Germany is demanding, but this book has been my best resource. As in all of his books, Steves states his approach to travel clearly: he doesn't cover everything, just the "best" places, the best according to him, of course. My tastes and orientation align with his (interesting, moderately priced travel, including as much local immersion as is reasonable), so I rely on his books to provide the wonderful backbones of great trips. For visiting places other than his "best" I use a more comprehensive guide book, like Lonely Planet, in addition to (rather than instead of) his.

The map is convenient to use, and the lamination keeps it from getting destroyed from use. But it is relatively expensive considering you can get the same map in your tourist guide or for free from any one of a number of places once you get to Prague.

Bought this for a recent trip to Berlin and tore out the pages on Berlin to take with me, since I don't like carrying any extra weight while out touring around. The info was useful, esp as a counterpoint to Rick Steves' pages on Berlin which I also carried. As we were heading to Schloss Charlottenburg, I read Rick Steves' assessment that it wasn't worth going! But there was good helpful info in the Fodor's writeup that helped us enjoy the trip we had already committed to.

I was glad to have this as an additional viewpoint on the various sites and sights.

The only thing that could be better if it were updated a little more. Things are constantly changing, so prices are probably changed, and some roads are no longer the same. I love the map of the cities, I just wish there were more cities! It is a great book to have if you are just doing a daytrip to that specific city though!

The lonely planet was adequate, but not great. It overemphasizes certain sites at the expense of others and conjures a narrow view of the city in question. It is hard to find specific examples, only that I found I used the guide less and less in favor of simply exploring on my own.

First of all, be warned that this book is a "2006" edition, which probably hasn't been updated since 2000 (see review by Marco). I got the book being aware of the issue, and treated it as a source of ideas of what to do and see around Berlin (it being my first time in the city). In this capacity, I enjoyed the book immensely. It gives great background on Berlin, and supplies plenty of ideas for what places to go to, and what to notice when there.

You just cannot rely on the listed opening hours to build your itineraries, so if you have a place you *must* visit, double-check its hours on the web (example: nowadays Potsdam palaces are open from 10am-6pm April to October, and 10am-5pm Nov to March). These guides have the best pictures! I don't take them with me though. Too heavy and not as practical as other guides like Rick Steve's. They are great for reading up on your future destination though. Amazon always has them at a good price(as they are not cheap brand new)and it doesn't matter if you buy a used one or one that is a few years old. There's no admission prices in them anyway.

This is a great high-level roadmap of Germany, but it lacks the detail needed to really explore the countryside. If you are driving through Germany like we did, buy an atlas that provides more route detail. There are so many country lanes in Germany that even a detail book sometimes misses the many villages you'll encounter along the way. If you're taking the train, this map works fine. If you're driving, look at something else.

I heard about DK guides through several friends of mine.

I visisted Munich and Bamburg. I found the pictures and recommended walks to be very helpful.

I have two major issues with the guide. The first is that it is light on hotels and restaurants. Their idea of moderately expensive is also outside of the range of most younger travelers. Their hotel and restaurant recommendations are, however, very well suited to couples and well-off travelers. Unlike Lonely Planet Guides, DK focuses on the sites and culture of the locations in it. It does not go into internet sites, hostels, laundry sites or rail/bus information. This makes is slightly incomplete for less structured travelers, like myself.

Wherever I go I use Fodors guides. I just got back from Europe and Fodors found unique places, great restaurants and comfortable hotels all at reasonable (for Europe) prices. Follow the orange or black stars, you can't go wrong.
