City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Greenland & The Arctic (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)
.Greenland & The Arctic (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Greenland
by: Etain O'Carroll, Mark Elliott

June 01, 2005
For those who want a good read and a good guide to fascinating Greenland, then this book will do it (though I think the previous edition of LP's guide to Greenland had a bit more coverage - especially the more off-the-beaten-track settlements). But anything beyond Greenland, LP seems to really lose interests in the rest of the Arctic world. It seems as if they just threw in a few sections just to say that they've covered it... It should really be titled "Greenland and an Introduction to the rest of the Arctic". All they give you are some sloppy details of a few selected regions under their "suggested itineraries" sections for other Arctic regions.

Living in Northern Canada myself (Yukon by the way...not Vancouver), I know ... Read More:

.Driving to Greenland: Arctic Travel, Northern Sport, and Other Ventures into the Heart of Winter (Travel Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Greenland
by: Peter Stark

April 25, 1994
Peter Stark speaks warmly of the `carnivorous' North in his introductory essay, "A Life Built on Snow." The `life' he refers to is his own. His grandfather was a skater and iceboater, he and his mother and father were (and are) skiers. His whole family belonged to the winter. All the way through this book, wintery thrills overtake fear--the thrill flying four hundred feet down a ski jump; the thrill of stomping a ski into the snow at the top of a slope, then watching the resulting avalanche take out the whole hill; the thrill of hunting narwhal off Greenland's icy shore.

The author drives to Greenland in the sense that he arrives in a two-engine Cessna Skymaster after puddle-jumping across the bleak terrain of Baffin Island, dodging ... Read More:

The LP Iceland, Greenland and Faroes book reviewed here is now outdated. It has been superseded by specific books on Greenland and on Iceland while if you're looking for the latest practical info on the Faroe Islands you'll now need to buy the Scandinavian Europe book. Although that doesn't have a huge coverage of the islands, it should be fine for a one-week trip - indeed the Bradt Faroes book is by comparison almost over detailed with stuff that's of little real help while the Bradt town maps have some serious errors.

I have enjoyed Ehrlich's writing style, very poetic descriptions about the ice and the people. She switches back and forth between her own experiences and historical expeditions, and the contrasts are interesting.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The First Crossing of Greenland
.The First Crossing of Greenland
City Travel Guides > Books > Greenland
by: Fridtjof Nansen

2003-03
Fridthof Nansen in this book did more to bring skiing to the larger world than any other individual. Until his Greenland crossing on skis, few outside of Norway, or Scandinavia at the most, had heard of skiing, although of course it had existed there for centuries. The early chapter of the book on skis and "skilobing" (skiing) is a marvelous account of the sport, and particularly of Sondre Norheim and the Telemarkers who revolutionized it as recreation.
Nansen writes the book in what can only be called a charming tone. He makes the crossing of the icecap seem easy, and indeed, most of the harrowing detail of the expedition relates to the efforts of the party after being dropped off at sea on the east coast of Greenland, through the ice floes with great ...
