. The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition
City Travel Guides > Books > Ireland
by: Caroline Alexander
November 03, 1998
A dear friend gave me this book when it was released and I became hooked on all things "Polar". The Frank Hurley photos alone are worth the price of the book. If you really want a treat, check out the photos under a magnifying glass---there are many interesting details missed with a casual glance. This is Ms. Alexander's best work (I read The Bounty a few years ago, and while a nice read, it pales in comparison to this gem.) I've given at least a half-dozen copies of this book to friends and family. And, while it may have the dimensions of a coffee table book, please read it if you have it; the prose is tight---and the Hurley photos. This book would be an excellent gift to a young person, as the photos are spectacular, but more importantly, the example of leadership ... Read More:

. Michelin Ireland/Irlande (Michelin)
City Travel Guides > Books > Ireland
from: Michelin Travel Publications
February 28, 2007
My husband, who has a fondness for detailed maps, absolutely adores this map of Ireland. Compared to the other ones we looked at, it was by far the largest and most detailed, showing the most towns and cities and roads on one map. Other maps only show you main cities and main roads and the color coding can be distracting. This map is clear and has a very extensive legend showing places of interest and historical sites.
We are using this map to plan our trip to Ireland. It's tacked up on the wall so as we look through travel guide books, we can find the locations on the big map and plan our driving trip accordingly.
As for using this map while actually in Ireland remains to be seen. I doubt the size will lend itself to ease of use (unfolding it in a car ... Read More:

. The Wild Places (Penguin Original)
City Travel Guides > Books > Ireland
by: Robert Macfarlane
June 24, 2008
I love books about travel, esp in Britain, and I love nature. So I thought this book might be the perfect match. I was not disappointed! First, the book is filled with detailed descriptions of what he is seeing, so that you are seeing it too. His writing reminds me much of Chet Raymo's. I was esp fascinated with the map he made of the wild areas he is exploring. Its a map that doesn't look like any you've ever seen. But it connects all of the places he is visiting, and shows how all of these places are indeed connected. The book isn't all nature - he weaves in local history, interesting people, and stories along the way. I'd recommend this to anyone interested in the topic. My only complaint is that the book is making me want to return to that land, and thats just not going to happen ... Read More:

. Round Ireland with a Fridge
City Travel Guides > Books > Ireland
by: Tony Hawks
March 07, 2001
I enjoyed this book about Tony's adventures in Ireland. Like the cover says--he made a drunken bet no one expected him to keep, kept it anyway, and ended up with this adventure.
I, and several others in my bookclub, have no desire to see the stand up comedian in person. He didn't really come off as a funny guy in the book, particularly because he bombed both times he had a chance to show his stuff, but the book is delightful because it is peopled with quirky unforgettable characters and there's a wry humor in the writing.
SPOILER:
Tony's success in getting around Ireland with the fridge was definitely due to the call-in radio show that followed him from the beginning. He hardly struggled to hitch. Or find a place to sleep. Or eat. But that never diminished my ... Read More:
