.Lonely Planet Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania City Travel Guides > Books > Latvia by: Nicola Williams June 01, 2006 I generally love Lonely Planet books, so was a bit disappointed with this one. It's good as a quick reference guide, but nothing much more. It doesn't have very much background or history about some of the area's most important places. If you're going to buy only one book before traveling to the Baltics, choose the Rough Guide instead - we ended up using it almost exclusively towards then end of our trip. .Latvia, 5th (Bradt Travel Guide) City Travel Guides > Books > Latvia by: Stephen Baister, Chris Patrick November 01, 2007 Latvia is a tiny country, but you'd never know that from browsing this perfectly constructed travel guide. I won't blather on about this book, but suffice to say that it offers the optimum balance between historical, cultural, natural and practical information. Glossy photography? Not here. Buy this book for the quality of its writing. This guide does a particularly good job of explaining to readers how Latvia is not Estonia, not Lithuania, and certainly not Russia. The Baltic states, often (and incorrectly) considered one cultural space, become distinct countries in each of the Bradt guides. This one is especially good. .The Rough Guide to The Baltic States (Rough Guide Travel Guides) City Travel Guides > Books > Latvia by: Jonathan Bousfield May 17, 2004 I had used the first edition to help plan our 3 plus week trip to the Baltic states during May, 2008. But since it was published several years ago, I decided to buy the the 2nd edition (early 2008) which came out a few weeks prior to our leaving for our trip. How frustrating and what a waste of money. Much of the information had not been updated, many places had been closed for over 2 years. There are mention of new things coming in 2006!!! So what happened??? - needed serious editing by folks that "had boots on the ground" - not just using the internet for some updates. Thankfully, I had the Bradt guide and, best of all, were the up to date "In Your Pocket" guides which you can download free or buy light small magazine style when you arrive (check ... .Riga, 2nd (Bradt Mini Guide) City Travel Guides > Books > Latvia by: Stephen Baister, Chris Patrick November 01, 2007 Overall, this is an excellent guide. It gave us good hotel recommendations (we went through Riga twice on our trip, as Riga is AirBaltic's hub and so tried two hotels) and good suggestions for things to tour. Two limitations. First, the maps are weak -- most of the Art Noveau tour is off the maps in the back so you have to orienteer (or grab a tourist map at a hotel) to get to the right part of town (after which you can follow the walking map). Second, I think the book overplays the virtues of Riga's old town (which pales in comparison to Stockholm or Tallinn) and doesn't emphasize enough the need to step into the 19th century town (the Art Noveau tour and the Central Market) and visit places (such as the open air museum) ...
