. Lithuania, 5th (Bradt Travel Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lithuania
by: Gordon McLachlan
May 22, 2008
Solly Ganor has told us a powerful story of his life as a child and youth during the Holocaust. His details and honesty reveal a family that loved and cared for each other, worked hard, and took chances to survive. His autobiography with its details helps remove many misconceptions about Jews in the Holocaust that people create from the more common short and simplified accounts of the period. This is not an easy book to read, but it will greatly help you to redefine your understanding and respect for people caught in difficult situations as well as other genocide situations.

. Vilnius with Kaunas: The Bradt City Guide (Bradt Mini Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lithuania
by: Howard Jarvis, Neil Taylor
July 01, 2006
I used this little book to plan my recent (May 2008) stay in Vilnius. While the book was published in 2006, it remains accurate, though there are some minor discrepancies (the population is given as 553,000 on p. xiv, but 580,000 on p. 18). I booked my housing based on its recommendations, and used the hotel internet address it gave to make my reservations from the USA. The text is designed for a British audience, but this is hardly evident except that the Lithuanian currency is compared to pounds rather than to dollars. All the museums and restaurants that I visited confirmed the recommendations in the book. Rather than going with a formal tour group to the city, the Bradt guide was all that I needed. The book is not only accurate, but engagingly ... Read More:

. Lithuania: The Bradt Travel Guide (Guide to)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lithuania

I'm taking to these Bradt guides. As a dedicated Rough Guide reader, I have to say that these books impress me. There's something to the Bradt guides that other guides lack, and it's hard to put your finger on it. They're not glossy photo essays, and they don't include finely detailed maps. I think it's the depth of the writing that convinces me. You can tell that these books aren't packed with ill-informed "facts" or airline magazine history. You can tell that the authors aren't just blowing smoke.
This book covers Lithuania like the winter rain. The historic, cultural and literary contexts are superb. The listings are exhaustive and accurate. The "sites" are deep, not limited to tourist traps in Vilnius. The book covers all the cities ... Read More:

. Flying Visits Iceland Finland & the Baltic (Flying Visits - Cadogan)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lithuania
by: Joan Gannij
October 01, 2005
The combination of countries was almost ideal for the purpose of the trip I was about to embark upon. It included Iceland and Lithuania. I grew up in Lithuania, and often visit Iceland, but the first had been changing rapidly, so it is good to keep checking the facts, and there's always something new one can find in a travel guide, even about a country one knows well. It is also a good way to assess the quality of information in the book, checking against the familiar. In that respect, this guide did not inspire trust: quite many misspellings in the Lithuanian part, a wrong URL here, a wrong word there (Zemuoges for "strawberry" - should have been "braskes" as "Zemuoges" are for wild strawberries). It lists the individuals who helped out with fact checking (and, ... Read More:

I had used the first edition to help plan our 3 plus week trip to the Baltic states during May, 2008. But since it was published several years ago, I decided to buy the the 2nd edition (early 2008) which came out a few weeks prior to our leaving for our trip. How frustrating and what a waste of money. Much of the information had not been updated, many places had been closed for over 2 years. There are mention of new things coming in 2006!!! So what happened??? - needed serious editing by folks that "had boots on the ground" - not just using the internet for some updates. Thankfully, I had the Bradt guide and, best of all, were the up to date "In Your Pocket" guides which you can download free or buy light small magazine style when you arrive (check out online ...
