. When You Are Engulfed in Flames
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: David Sedaris
June 03, 2008
Rarely do I laugh outloud while reading a book, but that's what happens when you read David Sedaris... and when you least expect it. I bought the book especially for his essay on stopping his cigarette habit, since I am in the midst of that horror right now. This man can find humor in ANYTHING!! The entire book is a treasure. You start out reading rapidly and then find yourself slowing down to savor what he's saying. The man's outlook on life in general is hilarious!! I loved it.

. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: David Wroblewski
June 10, 2008
Honestly, I have mixed feelings about the novel. Overall I'd say it's a success for Mr. Wroblewsky. Congratulations! Now, the criticism. The first part of the story is written very well, the epithet that comes to mind is "solid". The middle part, I thought, sagged. I was annoyed by the story, didn't care for what was happening to Edgar, the main character, thought it was just purposeless milling around. The events took a turn that seemed completely senseless. Just then I was very close to putting the book down. In short, I'd excise the stumbling around in the forest and the story of Henry Lamb out of the book altogether. There was just not enough substance to it. The Henry character has a potential, but isn't given enough time or ... Read More:

. The Shack
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: William P. Young

The Shock was that it didn't transform my belief or relationship with the Lord Jesus and Our Father in Heaven by His Holy Spirit.
The Shock was how far short it fell in expressing the incredible, infinite, sacrificial, jealous, passionate, robust God-sized love and devotion the Lord has for us and how He has poured out that love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit given to us so we can love Him back and others with that same gigantic genuine unconditional wholehearted love.
The Shock was that God already said He was to be described and known by humanity as Father, Son and Spirit (He, never It or She). God prefers to be known and revealed in masculine gender for His Own reasons. I respect that.
The Shock was not knowing ... Read More:

. Fearless Fourteen (Stephanie Plum, No. 14)
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Janet Evanovich
June 17, 2008
I've read a few of these reviews and I agree with many of them. On the one hand we've got the same silly thoughtless fun that we're used to. On the other hand.. we've got the *SAME* silly thoughtless fun that we're used to. Janet tried to introduce new characters but theyre drowned in the quirks that our staples are starting to be choked down in as well. It seems like rather than characters with depth (which one might expect after fourteen books in a series), we just have a jumble of quirks. Somewhat amusing, yes, but lacking substance.
I was happy to see the growth between Stephanie and Joe, and i hope to see more growth from other characters. I love Steph, Ranger, and Joe just as much as the next girl, but this is getting ridiculous. At some point ... Read More:

. The Last Patriot: A Thriller
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Brad Thor
July 01, 2008
I'm not a huge fan of political thrillers. I feel like the characters lack depth and the dialogue is mediocre. And while I did find some of that in this book, I was impressed with the story. It was lively, and very informative. I really enjoyed the history of Thomas Jefferson and radical Islam. I think it's about time that someone did a book on those themes. If you liked the Da Vinci Code, you will enjoy this book. Either way, it's apparent that Brad Thor did his research.

. The Beach House
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Jane Green

I just finished reading "The Beach House" and it was amazing. It was extremely hard to put down. I found myself waking up an extra two hours early just so I would have time to read more of it. The characters are all beautifully thought up and realistic. It is easy to follow because each character is so unique. I love the theme, enjoyed the storyline and every single page. You know how in some books of other authors you think, "They could have done without this chapter." That is not the case at all in "The Beach House" or any of her books for that matter.
I just want to mention that I recently went to a book signing by this author and she is the most down to earth person you will ever meet. Everyone can relate to her. Although I am 22 I still can relate to much ... Read More:
