Bill Carter's FOOLS RUSH IN has got to be one of the finest memoirs ever written. Explains what happened in Sarajevo (and Bosnia) better than any book on the subject that I have read.

You'll shed your share of tears at the madness, cruelty and mindless slaughter and suffering that went on, but you'll also be laughing your butt off between bouts of deep sadness... (as the victims, trapped in Sarajevo, under under constant shelling and sniper fire, and I am talking about Serbs, Croats, Muslims--who referred to themselves as Bosnians & wishing to live together in a united way-- were able somehow to hold on to their sense of humor under these hellish conditions.)

I used this book for a week in Croatia, visiting Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split, and Brac. It was right on for timetables, maps, etc. This is the most important part for me, as I need a guidebook to be accurate in telling me when/how to take a train/bus from one place to another. Also, I liked seeing a few photos before I went, which helped determine what I wanted to see. Everything was written clearly, and organized well. The book is also a good compact size, easy to carry and not too heavy. I especially appreciated the history on cities and sites, as there is much to know about these old towns.

I am a big fan of the Eyewitness series from DK and own about a dozen of them. I have usually used Eyewitness on many of my trips and used other guides for supplemental information, if at all. I usually walk around with just my camera and the Eyewitness guide.

However, I have just returned from 3+ weeks traveling with another couple through Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Slovenia and found this guide to be pretty useless. It soon went into my suitcase and stayed there for the rest of the trip. I write this review in the hope that DK will redo this guide, as they are my favorite guidebook series.

The tone of this book is condescending. It is no where near the depth and quality of a Lonely Planet series. I would not waste the money.

I like the Lonely Planet city guides. I find them to be very useful and true as far as guides go. I have taken these travel guides with me on my trips to various cities. I enjoy making my travel plans using these helpful guides.

To my delight this map included Hungary in addition to the countries mentioned. This was perfect for us since we fly into Budapest before driving into Croatia. There isn't quite as much detail as I have seen on some maps but for me the broader area view works well. It's easy to see how to get from city to city and all our expected travel on one map. Be aware that there are no city inserts that you find on some maps so if you need that you'll have to find that detail another way.

I took three guides on a three week trip to Croatia in 2006: Lonely Planet, Bradt's, and this one. I used the first two to learn about where to stay and eat. I used the Knopf guide to truly learn about Croatia's amazing natural and cultural offerings.

The authors cover in much greater depth the historical, cultural, natural, and archaeological sites of lovely Croatia than any other guide book. It was an invaluable resource for choosing the best places to go and what to see and visit in the country.

The book itself is a pleasure to use. It's gorgeous, well-designed, illustrated, and written. The maps were superb and the most practical and useful of any of my guide books.

It is unfortunate that so few guides to BiH exist, but thankfully the Bradt guide is excellent enough to stand on its own. I lived in BiH for two years, and every expat I know had a copy of this book to help organize travel in the region. The historical overview and explanations of important customs are wonderful additions that help give travelers an inside look into Bosnian culture. Given that BiH is still recovering from the war in the 1990s, it can be extremely hard to plan a trip there without some inside knowledge; this guidebook provides that inside advantage to travelers who don't live in BiH or speak the language. An excellent addition to any travel library, this Bradt guide is a must-have for anyone planning to travel to BiH!
