This is a very well written, organized book for anyone planning to travel to Alaska by cruise ship. It contains very helpful information comparing cruise lines, also. I highly recommend this book.

This is almost certainly the best "overview" guide to Alaska Cruises you'll find. There are chapters on both cruising and the sights you'll see in Alaska, with lots of photos and illustrations plus a large pull-out map. If you're planning an Alaska Cruise, buying this book will be money well-spent.

This book wasn't on my radar screen until I happened to see a Twitter message referring to it. After looking it up on Amazon, I knew I had to read it... Cruise Confidential: A Hit Below the Waterline: Where the Crew Lives, Eats, Wars, and Parties. One Crazy Year Working on Cruise Ships by Brian David Bruns. My wife and I cruise quite often on vacations, so the chance to see some "behind the scenes" views of how the crew lives is always interesting to me on a number of levels. After whipping through this in about 24 hours (thank you, Mr. Insomnia!), I was all ready to go on our March cruise and view the experience in a different light.

As a first time cruiser doing the Med in June/July 2008, the timing of this book couldn't have been better for me. The profiles of the cruise lines and ships are nowhere near as comprehensive as those in Douglas Ward's Berlitz Guide, but they do provide a reasonable overview.

Where this book comes into its own is in the port profiles and advice section, which should be very helpful for those considering exploring ports of call independently, rather than taking ship's excursions.

The information is clear and concise, and the maps are very handy.

It has met or exceeded my expectations with excellent maps and complete descriptions of the navigable areas. It provides detailed navigation advice along with an overall description of what to see, facilities, history, etc...
