Yes, I get it, you've stayed in all the five-star, treats-you-like-a-Royalty, $400-per-night Grand Hotel suites all throughout the World, and you liked their banquet dinners with their fancy hors d'oveurs while enoying the view of their pretty, "sprawling gardens". You also should have mentioned your 24k-golden toilets and those diamond-embedded pillows you rested your head upon after a tiresome day of the luxurious tours.

Come on, I was looking for a general Tour Guide, not an All-Around-The-World Hotel Yellowpage! The compact size of the book was favorable, but I didn't know that would mean it also had compact, 20-second guides per city. I was hoping for something along the lines of "A Year od Adventures," but I didn't like this as much. It's divided up into chapters for different modes of travel, which means (for example) that there's a whole section on train trips. That's not really my thing.

When I buy travel books, I want to learn about places I'd never heard of before. That's getting tougher, 'cause I've heard of all kinds of places - did you know we have a whole state called "Delaware"? - but there are still a few out there. Most of them aren't in this book.

Get "A Year of Adventures" instead.

This book was very interesting. Limiting it to 1,000 things is both a plus and a minus for it. On one hand, there are things excluded from the book that I felt should have been in there in some locations. On the other hand, limiting it to 1,000 things keeps the book from being too long and cumbersome. Overall, this book was an enjoyable read but when traveling, I would definitely couple it with your own research about interesting attractions in the locale you are visiting.

I read this book before returning to Australia after forty years. I'd been there as an exchange student in 1967 and returned in 2008 with my grown son, for two weeks. I'd asked my son to read it to after I finished so that he'd have an idea what Australia was about. Bryson reports fairly and with humor. Even though it's been a while since it was written, what he wrote still holds true, although we found the music in public transportation in South Australia was all the way up to the 1980s, not the 1950s!

My only gripe with the book is his editorializing about how Australia has treated the Anangu (aboriginals). Americans have no moral high ground to stand on with respect to how we've treated native peoples. And while I do not pretend any expertise ... Read More:

I don't speak any Italian, so this guidebook was a bit of a lifesaver. I don't like to refer to books when I'm trying to experience the culture, but it was nice to be able to review this at the end of the day or in the morning before we started the day. I tried to learn a few important phrases and feel my way through the rest. We visited Venice, and most people in Venice do speak English. While I can confidently speak French, Italian is quite different (more akin to Spanish). I love the pronunciation guides; they were most helpful.

Don't buy this if you expect to find information on the southern Italian mainland.

The map at the front of this book sums up its disappointing lack of coverage of southern Italy. The map stops at the Amalfi coast and does not show the "foot" part of the country. Rick Steves' Italian mainland ends at a line drawn between Paestum and Manfredonia. So .... no Lecce, no Matera, no Otranto - there's absolutely nothing on Puglia. Truncated map = truncated coverage.

The title should be "Rick Steves Most of Italy 2008".

This guide is great and seems to be the guide of choice of pretty much everyone I saw during my three week stint in Thailand. I had to have seen it in at least 6 languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese), so considering that the international community seems to embrace it pretty well, I'd put some merit in its pages.

As much as I love this book, I have to admit that it isn't perfect. It puts a lot of information within its pages and sometimes misses some places (mostly restaurants and some guest houses) in the smaller towns. Also, the maps can be a little out of scale.
