The Blue Guides, while excellent, are not usually my go-to guides for travel. They usually tell me more than I want or need to know, and their lack of practical information means you can only use it in conjunction with another guide. Rome was an exception. There's simply so much there, and sites are often so poorly labelled and have so little information, that I found I actually needed to carry it around with me. In fact, my original Blue Guide was in a bag that BA lost, and after attempting to see the Roman Forum without it, I found an English-language store and paid 29 for a new copy. It's that essential.

I used this guide in 2005 and found it excellent, indispensable really. It certainly far exceeds any other guide to OxCam I've come across. And it will travel with me again.

If you have the least interest in the history and architecture of the two towns, get this book! It's very helpful with both the big picture and such details as what's what in this hall or that chapel. For example, there's over three pages on Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, with a wealth of information on when this and that was constructed and by whom. And there is an additional four pages (small print) on the rest of the college of Christ Church.

Superb guide to history, culture, geography, cuisine of Sicily with interesting sidebar vignettes, detailed maps and good photography. A bit heavy to travel with, however, but excellent reference to prepare for trip. This, combined with the more portable Frommer's, are a good bet.

"Blue Guide Greece" is wide-ranging, but its site descriptions and directions are often very skimpy; it should be supplemented with the excellent "Greece: an Oxford Archaeological Guide", which doesn't attempt to cover as much ground but does go into much more detail on the places it does mention.

I'm just back from 10 days in Le Marche. It's such a beautiful region, though largely ignored by tourists and guidebooks. I was lucky to have friends who recently purchased a home in the region and have been traveling there for years. This was the first time they had seen a guidebook for Le Marche, and they were impressed by the specific information on all the little towns that dot the mountain tops there. In fact, they liked it so much that I left it at the house for them and their future visitors to enjoy. I might even buy another one to have to plan my next trip there!

Carol von Pressentin Wright's BLUE GUIDE NEW YORK is a brilliant guide to the city and stands alone for historical perspective, cultural depth, and effective prose. Though I've lived in New York City for 12 years, this book serves as a constant companion, and I grab it nearly any time I walk out the door--every outing can now yield new layers of understanding of this, my adopted town. In the midst of a busy day, I might pass through, say, Union Square and take a moment to read the appropriate entry. Not only do I absorb details of architecture and city planning that previously eluded me, but also the whole checkered and colorful history of the place jumps to life.

1. review hotels, with phone numbers, email, website, closing seasons, price, and comments on quality;

2. review restaurants, with cuisine, price, phone numbers, email, website, and closing times and days;

3. have maps of towns with detailed and labeled streets (including one-way), marked with recommended hotels, restaurants, parking, and sites;

4. good regional maps for driving;

5. drawn or photographed areas for orientation;

6. printed plans of museums (with opening times and days) and identifying diagrams of detailed art works;

7. religious notes;
