City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Hiking the Grand Canyon: A Sierra Club Totebook
.Hiking the Grand Canyon: A Sierra Club Totebook
City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club
by: John Annerino

March 01, 2006
I was disappointed by this book. Mr. Annerino seems to be trying to impress us with his knowledge far too often and is long-winded most of the time. I much prefer authors who try to inform instead of impress, especially in a book that is basically a how-to-hike-in-the-Grand-Canyon book.

For example:
"... the Tonto Trail is the major east-west camino through the Grand Canyon." Now many, maybe even most, people who live in the parts of the US with a Spanish influence know that camino is Spanish for road. But how about other English speakers around the world?

Or another example:
"Assuming that the Colorado River isn't rumbling along at 30,000 cfs or more, you can follow the left-hand (south) side of the ... Read More:

by: Bill Perry

I can't believe no one has reviewed this very excellent book on "The Middle Atlantic Coast". I've read and reread and learned so much about the area I've lived most of my life. Perhaps it's the title "Natualist's Guide". Before I read this book I wanted to be (a Naturalist) and upon finishing it I found I was on my way. The Sierra Club guidebooks are extremely informative and this one in particular is a great buy.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Alaska: Images of the Country (Sierra Club Books Publication)
.Alaska: Images of the Country (Sierra Club Books Publication)
City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club
by: John McPhee, Galen Rowell

June 12, 1982
Galen Rowell was one of the great outdoor photographers and most of his books are full of spectacular pictures of mountain scenery. But if you are expecting a normal picture book about Alaska, this isn't it. Instead this is a look at a place that is full of ambiguity.

The book is structured around John McPhee's book "Coming into the Country". In that book McPhee gives an insightful description of Alaska as a place, and its inhabitants. The Alaskans seem torn between preserving the wilderness and developing it and the extracts contained in this volume capture that spirit. For example, McPhee provides admiring character studies of a number of people who came to Alaska because they just didn't fit in back in the lower 48 states. ... Read More:

.SC-WILD FRANCE (The Sierra Club Natural Traveler)

by: Douglas Botting

March 29, 1994
This book is everything I look for in a travel book; concise, useful info and it has good color photos and maps. The content is well organized and it also gives useful tips that I wouldnt normally think of, such as catching Mont St. Michel bay in winter during bird migration season.

HIGHLY recommended.

.The Deserts of the Southwest: A Sierra Club Naturalist's Guide (Sierra Club Naturalist's Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club
by: Lane Larson, Peggy Larson

June 06, 2000
We camped for a week in the Davis Mountains in west Texas in a section of the Chihuahuan desert last summer. This was not our first desert experience - we have hiked and camped across much of the Southwest over the last twenty years or so. This was an unplanned trip as we were headed toward southern Colorado, but we became fascinated by the Chihuahuan desert and somehow we never drove any further.

We were similarly quite lucky to find a copy of the first edition of Peggy Larson's Sierra Guidebook in a bookstore in Alpine, Texas. She presents the deserts of the American southwest (and northern Mexico) in a literate and educated fashion. She manages to discuss individual plants and animals in some detail while painting a large scale, ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Life With an Electric Car
.Life With an Electric Car
City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club
by: Noel Perrin

August 30, 1994
I first found this book in the library, and after returning it three weeks later, I was drawn back to check it out again. This is the only book of its kind, and made me want to immediately take a vacation--whether in an electric car or not! Perrin's journey takes him across America with Solo, his converted Ford Escort wagon, and he writes about a good portion of American culture, right down to his thrill to spend only $21 for a night in a hotel in Utah. He writes about all the questions posed him, the curiosities that were too irresistible to pass up, such as how expensive are the solar panels, what is the car's range, is it expensive to convert a regular car, and so on. Although Perrin's book is already over eight years old (and I was saddened to see ... Read More:
