Ms Millard has produced an extremely well written, thoroughly researched, and highly readable book about Roosevelt's amazon exploration adventure. She has created an exquisite balance between the main characters of Roosevelt and Rondon which are illustrated by letters, diary entries and reports. She has included fascinating didactic material about the relevent areas of Brazil. Also she provides a good perspective on historical events, the subject of exploration in the region and the other individuals involved on this particular trip. This book is fairly scholarly and serious, but I read it on a cross-country flight, using the detailed map insert to locate key items as I read. It made my enjoyment of the site itself many many times greater. Most local guides you hire at the site will only show you "Machu Picchu's greatest hits", and with the book's knowledge you can really appreciate what they are taking you to and can explore the rest effectively on your own. I was glad to have read and studied the book and its many illustrations ahead, however, as the weather was wet and using it as an on-the-spot guide wouldn't have worked so well.

We brought two guides with us to Costa Rica -- this one and Explore Costa Rica (Fifth Edition) by Harry S. Pariser. We found this to be a useful guide. It had plenty of information on basics. However, it lacked the detail found in Explore Costa Rica which has many places and much information not found in other guidebooks we looked at. We really enjoyed the author's sense of humor, as well as the extensive background information provided. For example, we learned a great deal about the rainforest and other ecosystems, history, culture, and economy. We also were able to find some great local restaurants as well as several ecolodges that we did not find elsewhere. EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDES are the best guides you could find. I've bought every one they have published to the places I have visited, and always know where I want to go and what are the most important places to visit,
with the pictures and 3D images of the buildings and maps I don't get surprises as to visit a place not worth while. You optimize your travel time. I have about twenty of their guides, just hope they increase the places they review in the near future.

As a loyal Lonely Planet reader, I thought Moon would be as good or better, considering the reviews for the two. This book is written for the author's ideals only - anyone who is really into sportfishing and seeing exclusively expats while traveling. It does a poor job of listing the more budget-minded lodging and restaurants, and has little to no mention of info that would suit someone with cultural interest. All restaurants and lodging are "to avoid the Ticos, book here" or "try expat Chuck and Susan's pace, here". It would help someone book an entire trip to see other travelers traveling, and to go fishing. When I first saw this book in my local bookstore, I was prepared to be be offended by the title alone...until I read what the title means to the author. Yes, there is a statue of God used during the Holy Week in the Sierra Madre where God has fallen so many times that he's left with one finger, giving Him the appearance of flipping the bird. At the same time, I'm sure that the author (Grant) literally felt like he was being flipped off by God as he goes from one terrifying encounter to another, including literally being hunted by coke fueled bandits just for the sport of it.

I have been collecting/using Rand McNally road atlases since the early '90s. They are consistently great atlases from year to year. Normally, I find the next year's atlas available in September, so I was very surprised to see the 2009 version available in May, 2008. When comparing the 2008 version to the 2009 version, it is clear that the 2009 version was released earlier than usual. There are very few updates that I noticed from one version to the next. Usually I can spot some updates from a mile away, so to speak. This time, I had to get both the 2008 and 2009 versions out and compare them side to side to notice any updates. I bought this for a couple I was tutoring (Spanish lessons) because they are moving to CR. I found it helpful and even though I already speak Spanish, I had no idea how differently the Ticos do it!

I've used these guide books for years. Chalcatzingo, Morales isn't even in the book. It's an important Olmec site. The major museum in Mexico City (National Anthropology) wasn't high lighted in the index. You have to hunt through every museo entry and there are many. This stuff is annoying.
