. The Places In Between
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Rory Stewart

Very difficult to read because it is padded with quoted passages in smaller print and footnotes. The quotes from Babur's travels are relevant to the adventure, but I wish Mr. Stewart had found a less annoying way to include them.
While we never learn why the author made this trip--other than it was the final leg of his journey--I think he was about as well prepared, educated, and experienced as a westerner could be in that part of the world. Still, it was a ridiculously dangerous thing to do and I fear that there are idiots out there who know nothing other than how to walk who will attempt the same trip.
Other reviewers complain that the author did not spend enough time describing the views as he walked. I disagree. ... Read More:

. Turkey (Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Verity Campbell
April 01, 2007
We just used this guide -- thankfully supplemented by others -- to travel around western Turkey, including Izmir, Selcuk and Istanbul. We found it uniformly atrocious. Lonely Planet, I think, enjoys telling you *every* available restaurant, hotel, and cultural attraction, and aggressively refuses to filter. Consequently, we ended up staying at an abysmal hotel in Izmir and eating at any number of subpar restaurants. When we switched to the Time Out guide for Istanbul, we had nothing but success. I recommend Time Out Istanbul in the highest possible terms, and DISrecommend Lonely Planet Turkey with the same intensity.

. Shadow of the Silk Road
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Colin Thubron
July 03, 2007
Thubron engages in a three-part spiritual and physical quest to recapture the commercial highway of the Silk Road from China through Central Asia and Iran to Turkey. Along the route, he at length describes its history, archeology, myths, religions, and people, all of which in their genetic and cultural blending defy today's current political boundaries. Like beautifully glinting faience or tile are the remnants of its glorious past, if one follows a trail to search them out. In this quest, Thubron scales sheer cliffs with his fingernails and his determination and treads through villages and along rivulets to recover past civilizations' artistic glories peeking out in murals, tiles, minarets, chiseled caves, etc. His quest subjects him to risks to life and limb during ... . Egyptology
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Ian Andrew, Dugald Steer

I was actually disappointed in this Ology book. I have two others and the way the information is presented in them plus the little extras were just better in those. There weren't as many exciting extras in this one as I expected and the "mummy cloth" example was a bit disappointing. I bought this for my daughter and she became bored quickly due to the confusing way the pages were written and presented. I am hoping the next Ology I choose will be more like the first two I have.

. Israel & the Palestinian Territories (Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Michael Kohn
March 01, 2007
This is the first time that I have used the Lonely Planet series and it may be the last. I found that the restaurants recommended were mediocre, the lodging descriptions were only vaguely accurate and worst of all, the directions for finding the cafes & internet access was both poorly done and at times completely inaccurate. I will admit that the fact that the guide listed internet cafes, etc was quite nice. In addition, I thought that the description of the history and sites was quite helpful. However, if you instead choose the guide by Eyewitness Travel, you will find excellent descriptions and pictures of the sites and, in my experience, better restaurant and lodging recommendations.
