. Iraq: The Bradt Travel Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Iraq
by: Felicity Arbuthnot, Karen Dabrowska
June 01, 2002
This book was published pre-war and at least one of the authors was a long-time advocate of lifting sanctions and ally of John Pilger. It's terrible on the Kurdish regions. More up-to-date is Gilles Munier 'Iraq: an Illustrated History and Guide', although it lacks the details re hotels etc. Either might be of use - and or interest - to someone visiting. But surely no-one would be mad enough to rely on either for decisions about where to travel and where to stay: for either you must have up-to-date information from people on the ground whom you trust.

. Iraq in a Nutshell (Nutshell Notes) (Nutshell Notes)
City Travel Guides > Books > Iraq
by: Amanda Roraback
2004-09
Ms. Roraback's "Iraq in a Nutshell" as well as her entire Nutshell Note series should be required reading in our Public Schools. Ms. Rorabacks' written work will "open the eyes " of readers wishing to learn and experience the present middle east including information regarding its origin, social and cultural way of life. The "Iraq in a Nutshell" book is extremely organized, professional and informative. Ms. Roraback has a profound way of sharing information while being completely objective both politically and religiously . Our present perceptions of the middle east are generally based on both myth and strero-type. Ms. Roraback has managed to show us a new a clear image of a people and land we know little about. I highly recommended this reading. Daniel ... Read More:

. Iraq: The Space Between
City Travel Guides > Books > Iraq
from: powerHouse Books
2007-10
In a book with next to no words, this collection by Christoph Bangert quite possibly says more about Iraq than many books available today. At great risk of harm to himself, Bangert traveled Iraq with anyone who would let him follow along. The result is one of the most candid looks at what has happened in the country over the past several years.
The images are in a word, stunning. While it's possible to flip through the book quickly and not let the pictures sink in, doing so robs the book of its true value. Someone stumbling across this book in a store while shopping will most likely give the book only a cursory glance, but sitting down and really giving this book the time it deserves means getting lost in a single picture for 10 minutes or more. It took ... Read More:

. Axis of Evil World Tour: An Americans Travels in Iran, Iraq, and North Korea
City Travel Guides > Books > Iraq
by: Scott Fisher
December 10, 2006
Part PJ O'Rourke and part Paul Theroux, self-described writer, business owner, and professor Scott Fisher embarks upon what may be considered by many a fool's errand; travel to each of the so-called "Axis-of-Evil" countries: North Korea, Iraq, and Iran.
-North Korea-
The book begins with the author traveling deep into the heart of the Never Never Land of Kim Jong Il's North Korea. There he encounters fully brainwashed and sycophantic followers of the "Dear Leader." The government-run tour is the only way that foreigners may travel there and he describes the surreal experience with amusing insight and an alarming penchant for annoying the aforementioned sycophantic followers. His often heated and always honest exchanges with his guides and a ... Read More:

. Travels in American Iraq
City Travel Guides > Books > Iraq
by: John Martinkus
2004-10
Earlier this year Australian freelance photojournalist John Martinkus spent seven weeks travelling Iraq. He goes beyond the supposedly safe Green Zone in central Baghdad, driving from one trouble spot to another accompanied by his ex-Iraqi Air Force translator. He isn't embedded with anyone. Now this journey would be suicidal. Then it was just dangerous beyond belief.
The prologue of the book opens with him in the midst of gore of the second March 2004 Karbala Bombing. Martinkus had been only 100 meters away when it went off. Returning to Baghdad that night, his exhausted shock only just deadens the horror of flicking out with his pen the pieces of brain and flesh stuck in the soles of his boots.
Outside of the now notorious Abu Ghraib prison, he spoke ... Read More:
