. Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah and Meccah (Volume 1)
City Travel Guides > Books > Saudi Arabia
by: Richard Burton
June 01, 1964
I confess: Richard F Burton is one of my heroes. In part, it's because much of my life has been spent in his traces, from India, through the Middle East, to Baltimore and the Great Plains.
He's simply a fabulous story-teller. Whether he's commenting on the sexual proclivities of the people of a region, their food, clothing, culture or religious practices, he's just fascinating.
This book really should not be sold separately from the second volume; they go together. That said, this is an excellent introduction to 19th C. Arabia. It's an Arabia that exists only in the minds of traditionalists--foreign or Arab--but it informs so much of how the Arabs see themselves that it's "must reading."

. Saudi Arabia: The Business Traveller's Handbook
City Travel Guides > Books > Saudi Arabia
by: Andrew Mead
2008-04
This is a very-useful general reference for the foreign business person making his or her first visit to the kingdom and interacting with Saudi hosts or counterparts. Descriptive data are fairly accurate as of the year of publication (2008) of this revised edition. Good coverage of business practices, etiquette, customs and standards among urban Saudi business classes and officials.
My major criticism is the quite-small size of the type, which makes reading this book a mental and visual ordeal after a few hours.
Recommend this book as a convenient and relevant "get smart fast" basic reference.
Hope this helps.

. Lonely Planet Saudi Arabia
City Travel Guides > Books > Saudi Arabia
by: Anthony Ham, Brekhus Shams, Anthony Madden
September 15, 2004
As with most guidebooks, you can't really expect much depth in this one. I think the book errs in trying too hard to discuss political events and not enough on what the country's really like. It's not at all clear, in fact, that Mr. Ham actually ever visited the country.
His political discussions are actually quite dated, even though the book same out only a couple of years ago. Much has changed since 2002, when the Saudis themselves were the victims of terrorist attacks. The country is planning its first nation-wide municipal, elections, for instance. This would come as a major surprise if you were to rely on this book alone.
The book's not bad, but it's really for people who know nothing much about the country. There are better ... Read More:

. The Hadj: An American's Pilgrimage to Mecca
City Travel Guides > Books > Saudi Arabia
by: Michael Wolfe
September 02, 1998
On the strength of a travelogue alone, I would give Wolfe's book a 4 star. It has all the ingredients of a piece written by a well-read traveler: historical contexts, quotations from predecessors who have traveled the same path, descriptive passages concerning both landscape and human figures, and most importantly, a show of restraint by withholding ethnocentric judgments that fly all too easily when cultures collide.
The Hadj is a good primer for stateside readers whose only education about Islam consists of shouting pundits on fair and balanced news stations. It shows that there is a majority of Muslims who are not concerned with violence and are not preoccupied throughout the day with terrorist thoughts.
The problem begins when ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet Arab Gulf States: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Oatar, Saudi Arabia & the United Arab Emirates (Lonely Planet Arab Gulf States)
City Travel Guides > Books > Saudi Arabia
by: Gordon Robison
1996-10
I used this book for my travel to Saudi Arabia following the footsteps of Nassir Khusraw, the Persian poet and philosopher who went to Mecca in 1045. According to this book the distance between Medina to Jeddah and Mecca is 390 and 410, respectively. Nassir Khusraw in his "Safarnameh" says the distance between Medina and Mecca is 100 Farsang (about 600 kilometer). I was wondering why he overstimates the distance. In my book, then I added a paragraph explaining the reasons and theorizing that he might have travelled a longer route, due to dangers on the road and search for water. He was always correct in his estimation of the distance between many cities he travelled. Then I found out about MSN Encarta World Atlas. I typed the name of these cities and found out the distance ... Read More:
