The new July 2008 edition has just reached me. It's a great advance over previous editions (see other reviews on this site). Many text-boxes and references to more specialist guides have been added. Everything has been updated and substandard accommodation deleted. It's very compact, light and easy-to-use - except for the street maps. These seem more difficult to read than ever! Extra plans showing the layout of ruins and of some museums are great. However, the prices given for flights and accommodation are already well out-of-date. Judging by the introductory sections, the guide was completed in about February 2008. Lonely Planet needs to speed-up its printing schedule, although I'm sure the Chinese printers were not to blame for any delay. ... Read More:

Beautifully created book that would do any coffee table proud. Having said that, it also works in the kitchen for cooks and chefs that are confident, adventurous and able.

Having had the pleasure of dining at Greg Malouf's MoMo Restaurant in Melbourne, I am aware of the love and affection he infuses in each dish he creates. This love of food and the culture associated with it comes across in every page of this book. The book is a treasure trove for cooks who like to experiment and step outside the everyday. The Pomegranate dressing is sublime on barbequed meats, the grilled sardines with lentil tabbouleh is exquisite and the zucchini and mint fritters to die for. I have cooked them all and enjoyed +++

This dictionary is useful but limited in utility if you want to learn Lebanese. It does not cover many words used in the Lebanese dialect of Arabic. It makes specific references to Syrian and Egyptian words but not Lebanese.

The West gets to see so little of what life is really like in the Middle East, much less how gay men live. I didn't want this book to end and wish that there could be a sequel. It's like an old-style tavelogue with a big gay twist, and honor, tragedy, opportunism and harsh reality. These are real people (photos included).

This book gives the basics on where to stay, where to eat and how to get from point A to point B. The background information on the ancient sites is sparse. For better archeological info (out of a guide book) I'd recommend Mathew Teller's "Jordan-The Rough Guide" over this book. It provides more info on Petra and other ancient sites in Jordan, and focuses all its energies on Jordan alone.

Damien Simonis is one of the authors of this LP edition, and I love his other books, so I don't think the reason this book isn't a good choice has to do with the authors... it is simply because it is a small book dedicating itself to two countries... This author is so sensitive towards her subjects. I really love this writer. She tackles difficult questions and situations. This is an inside story where Joris looks at situations (Syrian 'common' life) from her own perspective and she tries to do this from the country's/peoples perspective. Joris also examines herself along this perspective. Like a real journalist on one hand and like a real novelist on the other hand, in my opinion.

I've just returned from a month long stay in Syria where I traveled throughout the country. During my travels I met many interesting people young and old and from every political persuasion. All were extremely friendly to me as an American and stated that they viewed the American government (read Bush) differently from the American people. I was very disappointed in how out of date the Cultural Shock book was in almost all areas. The country is no where near as conservative as you would be led to believe by this text. On many occasions I couldn't believe that he was writing about the same country as I visited. I read the book before I went and then reread it upon return.
