Adrift is the true story of Steven Callahan, whose small boat sunk in the Atlantic Ocean, after he floats on his inflatable raft for 76 days before finally being rescued.


This is right out of one of my favorite genres - true life survival stories. The story starts slow, but once he has to abandon his boat sinks and he is has to really start surviving, it is very engaging. I greatly enjoyed reading of all the details of his water-gathering, shark-deterring, fishing and storm riding.

I am pretty sure I would have died about day 20. Great reading for anyone interested in this genre. Other favorites from this genre include "The Long Walk", "We Die Alone" and "Alive".

I have loved this book! I take it everywhere with me so that I can always pick it up and read about another city to travel too. This book is full of entertainment, travel, food, fashion, and safety suggestions. Each city is carefully mapped out and full of wonderful travel ideas for every woman out there. This book doesn't cater to one personality type, it caters to everyone. This book is great for planning your trip!

Four corners is a tale of a 24 year old woman's journey across Papua New Guinea. Her experience makes for a wonderful read, but she overworks the "finding herself" bit. Despite the self obsessive and all too frequent maudlin tangents, Salak writes in tight prose that grips the reader early in the book and doesn't let go until the second to last chapter (the last chapter is so sappy it brought the entire book from a solid 5 stars to a 4. It nearly morphed the read from high adventure to a "chick" book).

I travel a lot, often alone, for work and for fun and someone recommended this book to me. I've had mixed experiences with travel writing so I was a bit wary but I liked the idea of a book on women traveling solo (and I know there are many others as well, which I'm now planning on exploring!).

Anyway, I started reading and was immediately disappointed. Although the first story about Borneo was interesting and well written, it was about a woman traveling with a film crew! My whole draw to this particular book was to "share" others experiences in solo travel. But fortunately things picked up after that and I found this a very interesting collection. This book is interesting and keeps your attention the whole way through! At first I was kind of irritated at the author for not giving Olivier, the cute French guy a chance. But then towards the end of the book she starts to realize she has to let things flow and not try to control them. She seems to feel more at home in America than in Europe and starts to unwind a bit and then she falls in love! She planned her dates with no down-time at the beginning and therefore was grumpy all the time! It makes you realize how important it is to always have time for yourself alone otherwise you can't enjoy things no matter how nice they are. Better to travel to one spot and stay a while than to always be on the move and tired.
