I think this is the best book written on the topic of third culture kids. The book is insightful and answers questions that are just under the surface for both kids and those who love them.

This compilation of short stories written by expat women is entertaining, inspiring, funny, and poignant. Exploring cultural idiosyncrasies through these stories forgivingly reminds the reader of her/his own faux pas in foreign lands.
Ultimately, each story is surprisingly varied in its endpoint, but they share a nostalgia for the experience of living abroad, especially for the first time. This would make a great gift for someone about to move abroad, study abroad, or even someone considering it. For those who already have, it certainly is a lovely opportunity to reflect on these experiences...or even write about them!

I am currently researching teaching opportunities in Japan, and they are plentiful. While I have yet to go to Japan, reading Don Best's book has answered a lot of questions I had had (e.g. how can one afford to live in Japan?). It includes information on the English industry in Japan, qualifications for teaching, suggested preparation before leaving for Japan, finding jobs, surviving in Japan, the interview (including hints on creating a demonstration lesson), pay, work visas, and settling in.

One concern I had was that this book was written in 1994. I wrote to two address in the book and both letters were sent back to me claiming the addresses were incorrect. I suggest checking (possibly through internet searches) addresses before writing to them. There ... Read More:

When I read the autobiography of former Mexican president Vicente Fox who hails from Guanajuato State I became curious about the city of the same name. My research led me to this useful little book packed full of practical information about the charming, historic city of Guanajuato. The book is clearly written and my only criticism is the frequent repetition of information. It could use some fine tuning by a careful editor. I found it clear, honest, helpful and even inspiring. I am an exchange student coordinator for students that come from very different cultures from the United States. This book was somewhat helpful to me in discovering different ways to explain to families concepts such as "unspoken rules" or how to treat an exchange student within your household, as well as cultural differences.

This book does help families understand their undetected cultural biases in a way that I haven't seen in other publications.

Not all host families work out and I intend to use this book as a resource for families that are having challenges arranging to life with an exchange student.

I have directly supervised 9 students over 1.5 years and indirectly with hundreds more.

I'm so glad there are books like Global Citizen that tell you and try to show you how to live overseas. I never knew they existed before either, since expatriation from America is a subject that the US media considers taboo and non-existent. But yet, it's very real because many are dissatisfied in America and realize that it's not the ideal world it claims to be, nor is it the place where whatever's not possible is not possible anywhere else.

In fact, my greatest discovery overseas is that: "Beyond North America, the social climate is INFINITELY more natural and free flowing, and I am NEVER without attractive female companionship."

This book though, only gets into a few reasons for expatriation, describing only a few benefits that are at the tip ... Read More:
