I'm finding my torts class difficult at times, so I'm glad to have this book for my text. It has a lot of examples to illustrate each concept, which is helping me grasp all the ideas pretty well. Also, the book is not nearly as expensive as a lot of textbooks, so I feel I'm getting my money's worth out of it.

This clearly crafted guide helps you decide how to structure your estate and makes sure you do not miss anything important, including health and do-not-resuscitate directives. You may well need a lawyer nonetheless, but you will know why and you will better understand their advice. It has my highest recommendation.

Blacks is the best on the market in terms of law dictionaries. However, the downside is you need an internet connection for it and that is not always the most convenient for those with limited internet access. So much nicer when you can just save things to your computer if you choose.

This is an excellent textbook and reference book on fundraising for non-profits. I recently joined the board of a non-profit and knew nothing about fundraising, but this book got me up to speed very quickly. The author treats you like a reasonably intelligent person, in contrast to some other primers that are too cutesy, and she writes in plain English and avoids jargon. It's packed with information, web sites, references, real-world examples, and recommendations. And it's up-to-date. If you're working for or with a non-profit, you need this book.

This book gets a 5/5 for substance but a 1/5 for style.

To be fair, the writer of any book about writing has the heightened duties of the bomb-disposal technician or the internal affairs detective. Garner is fastidious to a fault and, given his audience, this is understandable. But the final product sounds like William F. Buckley, Jr. reading the phone book through Stephen Hawking's voice synthesizer. This is not boring, but distractingly awkward. I found myself paying more attention to the author's ecclectic phrase choices and mincing composition than his message. Garner weighs the advantanges of the spare "Attic" style of writing (Holmes) against the florid "asiatic" style (Cardozo), then somehow manages to adopt the worst ... Read More:

Simply put, this is a handy writing guide for lawyers. Just casually flipping through this book for a few minutes will make you a better writer. For example, I especially like the lists, which give you substitutes for legalese or summarize styles that Judges like. Briefly reading through this book taught me more than I learned in an entire semester of Legal Research & Writing. I highly recommend it.

I originally purchased this book for my friend, who was considering pursuing a paralegal certificate to help with a career change. Before giving it to him, I managed to read this book in its entirety. With only my brief academic background in law (Business Law I&II, and Law of the Workplace) I found this book to be an enjoyable, easy read, and full of useful information and insight into the paralegal industry. (Not to mention a CD full of bonus material.)

I also found it intriguing that this book was written by the founders of The Center for Legal Studies, providers of paralegal courses in many of this country's junior colleges.
