. Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1)
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Stephenie Meyer
September 06, 2006
For many reasons I banned reading this book. Working in retail with teenie girls barraging the bookstands demanding for the next Stephanie Meyer book was just annoying and made me believe these books were meant for the intelligently-deficient. A friend online said I should at least try it and see for myself. I thought about J.K. Rowling's work. I hated Harry Potter at first, then gave the books a chance since all my friends did, and turns out I loved them all. In thinking that Harry Potter wasn't just meant for kids, maybe Twilight wasn't just meant for dumb teenie girls.
So I read it. I freaking loved it!
I'm not big on romance novels, but this isn't just a romance novel. It's so much more than that. This is ... Read More:

. Eclipse (The Twilight Saga, Book 3)
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Stephenie Meyer
August 07, 2007
If you've enjoyed Twilight Collector's Edition (The Twilight Saga) and New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2), you're bound to love Eclipse, as it hurtles toward a resolution of Bella Swan's dilemma: how to cut herself off from her family to spend undead eternity in the company of her beloved Edward. Where most teenagers associate 16, 17, 18 and so on with increasing privileges and freedom, Bella sees each passing year as separating her further from her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen, forever preserved as a (incredibly good looking) seventeen year old boy. Bella wants very much to become a vampire and enjoy eternity with Edward. However one mortal milestone after another gets in the way.
Jacob Black is really the character development study in ... Read More:

. The Hunger Games
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Suzanne Collins
September 14, 2008
i really loved this book. i read it as a recommendation of the author of the Twilight Serives (Stephenie Meyer). This book definitely lived up to the expectation of being a page turner. Suzanne Collin's writing style is sharp, biting, vivid & illustrative. the premise is also interesting. set in the future, food is a scarcity, the government uses a tactic to suppress rebellion: the hunger games. one boy and one girl (from ages 12-18) are chosen from each district to fight to the death. the reward is life and also retribution and glory for their district. i was hooked from the beginning and i can't wait for the next book!!

. The Time Paradox (Artemis Fowl, Book 6)
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Eoin Colfer
July 15, 2008
I've read that male writers tend to be more plot based and female writers more character based. Every time I read a book I've been noticing that this statement is true. Women writers portray more emotion in their characters and this is what makes them so interesting. Most of the Artemis Fowl books are plot based and this one is too, but there are more glimpses of internal conflict from Artemis in this book than the others. He realizes things about himself which he doesn't particularly like and this is exactly the kind of character writing I enjoy.

. Nation
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Terry Pratchett
September 30, 2008
In spite of being the best-selling living British author, and one of the most talented, most hoidy-toidy types pigeon-hole Terry Pratchett away in the ghetto called "fantasy humor". So a very large number of educated people have not even heard of him, let alone give him any space as an author of English Literature. This is in spite of writing some of the most truth-filled and life-filled three dozen books you'll find in a bookstore. Perhaps Nation was Pratchett's conscious decision to address that, or perhaps Nation was a book Pratchett, the author, simply had to write before he stopped being able to write.
Nation is not Discworld. It's not humor, parody, or satire. It's categorized as "young adult", which is something of an insult, because it's seemingly ... Read More:
