In The Ruby in the Smoke, Phillip Pullman combines three of my favorite things: young adult fiction, a good mystery and a Victorian era setting.

Sixteen-year-old Sally Lockhart has recently lost her father in a shipwreck. After receiving a mysterious note warning her to "beware of the Seven Blessings", she visits her late father's shipping firm in the hope that someone there can make sense of the note. There are great things about this book. I really liked the non stero typical Jews in the book, from the Jewish Gangster with hopes of being in the Cabinet, to stary eyed Zioniests with everyone in between. However, I do not understand the actions of main character at the end, would she not have tried to help people she wants to help through world of investment that she understands. Also there is a whole inter marrage question not even delt with. Plus page after page is wasted on the kid having an accident, and whole chapter which does nothing to move the story should have been left out. What is worst disappoment is some of it seems to have been recycled from the second book.

I'll save a review of the book for others, but suffice it to say that I really liked it. As a narrator, Anton Lesser is superb. I've listened to a lot of audiobooks, and he is one of the best.

However... it was when I was referencing my place in the story in a paper copy that I noticed that a paragraph in a certain physical scene between two characters has been entirely omitted. Later, when the male is asking the female whether their encounter was painful, the dialogue has been altered. I don't know if the audiobook producers are responsible, or if this represents a rewrite by the author, but I was annoyed.

After reading one of Nora Roberts paranormal romances (Face the Fire) and being distinctly underwhelmed, I felt it was only fair to give her a chance to redeem herself with a crime story, which is more to my taste as reading matter.

And I did enjoy this more, in that I was at least able to finish it. However, that said, the 'annoyances' factor was just as high for this effort as it was for her romance.

A short list includes her decision to shorten words into some kind of b*stard amalgam of cop show and futurism. I had to struggle with wits, vics and transpo throughout, with wit, in particular, producing some very strange misunderstandings as in "Find me the wit who..." What? Its good but not as good as Stormbreaker, its slower and repeats itself a little from book one.
However that said its still a great book , plenty of action and drama.

Lest I get carried away with verbose praise, I just want to say that this is superb storytelling by Donnelly. Admittedly, I had no knowledge of the real murder of a Grace Brown. And though her letters were indeed heartbreaking, and at turns, horrific to read, I was more fascinated with the lives of Mattie and Weaver - two of the strongest characters I've ever encountered. After reading this novel, I found myself grateful that I, as yet, have not gone through the kind of back-breaking, and, dare I say it, near soul-defeating hardships the people in this novel had. But it takes masterful narration like that of Donnelly's to infuse hope, laughter, and spirit in the stories of those living in Eagle Bay.

It's not a very deep story. I read it in one evening. It does have an interesting psycological twist and puts forth the truth that our words do hurt others and start a series of negative events. There is a fair level of morbidity to the story. I really don't see the need for the offensive language. It had every word that i don't want to hear or my kids to say. I know that the author thinks its probably pertinent to the story line, but it really could have been just as interesting without. i think that's a sign of a writer that is not very creative as evidenced by the shallowness of the story line--kids with abusive parents that act out. I threw it away and told my kids that it cussed all the way through.

Anyone who enjoys a classic haunted house/ghost story tale in the old British tradition will love Susan Hill's, "The Woman In Black".

This story is all about atmosphere and not things jumping out at you or gory kill scenes. A young attorney is sent to a remote town in Northern England to go through the house of a recently deceased old woman who had been a long-time client of his law firm.
