Okay, this is seriously one of the most brilliant books I have ever read, and I have Henry (who is also brilliant) to thank for introducing this to me. (Thank you, Henry.) Although this book has been around since '93, I suspect it's nowhere near as recognized as it deserves to be, but with time that will change, I hope.

The full title is "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art," and what Scott McCloud does is explain what we take almost completely for granted, not just about comics, which he convincingly raises to a fine art, but also about the way we 'see,' and think we see, the world around us, especially as it is represented in words and images.

This new edition will prove to be another classic 2 year period. Snoopy will continue his charade as the World War I Flying Ace (as pictured on the cover). Charlie Brown's beloved little red haired girl moves away (he still has to feed his dog amidst a broken heart and Linus gives him a little boot for not getting to know her when he had the chance!). Lucy ponders the meaning of life. Snoopy is the 1st dog to go to the moon and is left at the Van Pelts while Charlie and Sally Brown are on vacation. Charlie Brown has the chance to meet Joe Shlabotnik at a baseball banquet dinner and brings Linus and Snoopy (Snoopy flirts with Peggy Fleming). Achewood is the greatest advance in comic art since "Calvin and Hobbes", and this is Onstad's first book with a major publisher. For the uninitiated it's a good introduction; for the devoted fan it's essential. I'm making Dinosaur Potato Chuds for dinner tonight.

Animation is now done in 3-D this book is dated.
The book I have on by Don Bluth were much more elaborate on the animnation process then this book. The drawings are primative and don't offer much of the way of substance you can take them at face value.
If you like stick figures you might like this book.

This collection of "This Modern World" weekly cartoons from 2005 through early 2008 is the best yet. Trenchant, political, and very funny - and it's all in color too! I suspect that liberal voters will enjoy it ever so much more than members of the Bush Administration.

The introduction is relatively subtle and quite funny in itself - after disclosing that the cartoon has been outsourced to China, "Tom" then gives a wrong name for the strips and casually mentions that he's looking forward to reading them.

Historians will use it as source material to chronicle the U.S.'s strange political history of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. But you don't have to wait to read their histories, you can enjoy the book now and relive all the ... Read More:
