Blame Malcolm Gladwell - but after Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking social psychologists of the type he featured in that book have been coming out of the woodwork to publish in the pop science market in alarming numbers figuring, reasonably, enough that there's a bit of money to be made on the side. I'm guessing royalties from articles in the International Journal of Psychology would pale in comparison.

One of the latest is Dan Ariely, whose unique selling point is a horrific accident he sustained as a student Israel which left him with burns to 70% of his body. Having been hugely happy with Blink! I went out and purchased The Tipping Point almost right away. It, like most the other books I purchase, sat on a bookcase dedicated solely to books-yet-to-read until a few days ago. And now it shall be moved to its permanant home on a different bookcase. The point of all of this is that The Tipping Point is a well-researched, highly interesting, and unique book. The problem is that it, like Blink!, doesn't stick (see book for details). It's interesting but doesn't have the stickiness of most bestsellers, and is most certainly not something I would have watched the count down date for publishing like I'm doing with a few others. Good, but not great. Interesting, but not facinating. A 4, but not a 5.

This is an interesting book to read, with some decent ideas on how things come to happen, It reads a little dry at times but overall it is worth the time spent and does make one think of a differnet approach to persuasion and public influence.

The Brothers Brafman chose a truly fascinating topic for their book: the irrationalities hard-wired into the human brain that can lead us to make poorer decisions than we might otherwise. A number of books have been written about this topic of late, and this one isn't bad, but it isn't the best, either.

If you want a brief, competent and readable synopsis of the topic of the consistent ways that the human mind betrays us in our decision-making process, Sway is the book for you. If, however, you are looking for a more complete, deeper review of the subject, I recommend Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely. The Brafman's actually cite some of Ariely's work in Sway. I purchased this title for an MBA course, 'The Causes of Corporate White Collar Crime'. It, along with quite a few case studies, makes up our reading content for this course. Cialdini does a thorough job of focusing on a number of topics of influence: reciprocation, consistency, social proof, liking, authority and scarcity. For each of these topics, Cialdini successfully incorporates many real life examples to help flesh out and explain each of these. Instead of some hard to read textbook, it is an enjoyable read and easy to get into and follow.
