. The Beach House
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens
by: Jane Green
June 17, 2008
Nan is a feisty and eccentric 65 year old widow, who has lived alone for many years in a large house in Nantucket. Rather than selling her house, she decides to rent out some of the rooms for the summer. The book is about the people who come to live with her, all of whom have their own problems and the way that they all come together. It's a warm hearted and easy book - not one that will stay with you particularly, but a good summer read that hooks you in quickly and keeps moving at a good pace.
I've read a couple of Jane Green's early novels (Babyville and The Other Woman) and enjoyed them. "The Beach House" is quite different. It's still a light and enjoyable read but it's a change in style. Having said that, I enjoyed it just as ... Read More:

. Eclipse (The Twilight Saga, Book 3)

I am too old to be reading these books really. I won't tell you that the writing in these novels is especially challenging to read, or has a ring of poetry or genius. The characters presented in these books are about as three dimensional as most high school students. So why do I like these books? Perhaps it is because Bella reminds me of myself when I was 14 years old. She is so irrationally in love, selfish, and immature, even though she almost always tries to do what she feels is the right thing. The stories are not complex, but they are quick, action packed, and each chapter ends in a cliffhanger of sorts. In addition, the books often had me laughing and/or worrying about the characters.

. New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2)
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens

I liked the first book in the series (Twilight) and as soon as I finished it I went out and bought New Moon. It was immensely disappointing. Bella is incredibly boring, apathetic and acts like a brat through the entire book. The Jacob Black plot was SO obvious, no person with half an iota of intelligence would have taken as long as Bella to figure out. I just wanted to get to the end so it would be over, not because I much cared what happened to her or Edward. Can't say I like a character that spends an entire novel moping and takes a guy back the first chance she gets even though he treated her like dirt (for her own good, of course...so stupid). I won't bother wasting my money on the third book. I may get it from the library. Just how many books are supposed ... Read More:

. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)
City Travel Guides > Books > Teens

Okay ... I don't know what more could be said about this book ... good, bad or otherwise ... but here's my 2 cents worth:
I'm a grandmother, avid reader of all kinds of books. My son gave me the first 4 HP books for Christmas a few years back. My immediate reaction was "ick .. children's books .. did you make a boo-boo?" However, I read them (knowing nothing about HP) and was absolutely delighted. They took me to that place all favorite books do. I was drawn in to the story; the characters became a part of me; and I just had to see how it all turned out. So, there's the history.
I thought JK was spot-on with this book. She tied up all the loose ends, let us see most of our favorite characters again, one last time, and gave us an ending ... Read More:
