. The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2008 (The Best American Series)
City Travel Guides > Books > Essays and Commentary
from: Houghton Mifflin
October 08, 2008
Not much hard science, but every essay is compelling reading. Bring your scientific side up to date every year with this book. I have not missed one in the entire series. Every year I ended up thinking the new edition is the best ever.
John Cohen - You won't find hybrids in American zoos where purebreds are the rule but in alternate sites it's a different story. Whether by the natural method, artificial insemination, or by techniques that allow scientists to manipulate DNA, more are turning up more every year - zorses, wholphins, tigons, beefaloes, lepjags, zonkeys, camas, bonanzees, and pizzly bears. Some of them breed and appear more fit than either parent. I won't even mention the humanzees.
John Colapinto - *among my ... Read More:

. Ideas and Opinions
City Travel Guides > Books > Essays and Commentary
by: Albert Einstein
December 12, 1988
This is a great book to read on Einstein. It is a selection of papers and speeches taken over his lifetime (notably the first half of the twentieth century), grouped by subject matter (pacifism, the Jews, etc.). His language certainly advances in later years. The last section deals with his scientific works, where one can also see progression. One also sees him as a man of his times, commenting on institutions such as the League of Nations and the UN. Highly recommended.

. The Scientist as Rebel (New York Review Books)
City Travel Guides > Books > Essays and Commentary
by: Freeman J. Dyson
September 09, 2008
Dyson holds high credentials as an innovative mathematician and theoretical physicist, and has known, or, in many cases worked with, most of the leading scientists of the past six decades. He has spent the larger portion of his life as professor of physics at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Studies. His analysis of issues confronting disciplines other than professional science has defied the rigidly predictable partisan polemics of the typical commentator. These other areas of interest notably include history, politics, the arts, religion, culture and technology, ethics, and military technologies and strategies. Part of what makes his analysis so interesting is his tendency to cut across the grain of the ubiquitous partisan polemic in which our world wallows. He ... Read More:

. The Best American Science Writing 2007 (Best American Science Writing)
City Travel Guides > Books > Essays and Commentary
by: Gina Kolata, Jesse Cohen
September 18, 2007
. . . advances in medical knowledge and therapies, then this is the book for you. Not surprisingly, the Internet is increasing knowledge of the conditions that beset us. One of these, once thought to be only another unfortunate result of strokes, is now known to be more widespread. Joshua David's article on prosopagnosia - "face blindness" - reveals how people who cannot recognise faces, any faces, need not be victims of strokes. Face blindness can be congenital, and one estimate puts its prevalence up to six million people in the US alone. Another condition, Alzheimer's, is also undergoing expanded study, as Stacey Burling's essay follows. Post-mortem brain examination has been the only way to develop diagnostic tools. Recent work is providing new ways of learning if the disease has ... Read More:

. A Devil's Chaplain: Reflections on Hope, Lies, Science, and Love
City Travel Guides > Books > Essays and Commentary
by: Richard Dawkins
October 27, 2004
In this book, in vivid and virile prose, and many passages of stunning beauty, Richard Dawkins has created an illusion of certainty on one of the most critical issues of contemporary society: What does it mean to be a human being. The book is a collection of articles written over several years, with a literary grace and gift for imagery that is almost poetry.
The book is not a scientific treatise, but it waves the flag of science on every page. The science is sound, the science is breathtaking, for Richard Dawkins is a superb evolutionary biologist. But he speaks from the pulpit of Ethology, yet ventures into the domain of Anthropology.
Ethology studies animal behavior and yet he applies the principles and findings of Ethology to human beings, for one salient reason: he is convinced that ... Read More:
