. Principles of Microeconomics
City Travel Guides > Books > Popular Economics
by: N. Gregory Mankiw
January 27, 2006
Joseph Schumpeter once encouraged his readers to make up their mind whether they wanted simple or useful answers, because both could not be had at the same time. Mankiw opts for the former option. A student who knows little about economics and who will be exposed to the discipline for the first time by using this textbook will get a very narrow view of economics. He or she will have no idea that there are strong disagreements about economic phenomena and even different schools of thought. This can be expected: Mankiw is a neoclassical economist, that school is dominant for one reason or another, so few would expect him to go out of his way to point out that there are different intellectual traditions in economics. However, Mankiw does not even ... Read More:

. The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
City Travel Guides > Books > Popular Economics
by: Naomi Klein
June 24, 2008
Klein's "The Shock Doctrine" weaves together the systematic oppression of South American countries, the "help" given to Poland, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the current war in Iraq. Spotting the common threads in each instance, she then holds up the tsunami victims alongside the city of New Orleans to show the same benificiaries of government spending getting rich again. In every case, the parallel is drawn between the attempt to shape the client country's future and the medical technique of "shock therapy".
This is s a thick book but the reader intersted in trying to understand the rise of BLACKWATER, the peculiar hype around avian flu, and countless other quirks of disaster capitalism needs to read "The Shock Doctrine".

. A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, Third Edition (PMBOK Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Popular Economics
by: Project Management Institute
2004-11
Hands down, this is THE worst-written book of any kind, ever. My brain totally objects to reading sentences such as, "The project manager will have to be careful that the project manager does not make mistakes that will make it difficult for the project manager to manage the project." Think I'm kidding -- hey, no one could make this stuff up. After reading three or four sentences in a row like this, I was ready to fall off my chair, or else go beat my head against the wall. And who came up with the title: "Book of Knowledge". Sounds almost religious, or else like something they'd come up with in a Star Trek movie. Sheesh. Get it because you have to, but get thee -- quick -- to additional guides to help yourself pass the PMP exam.

As a corporate human resources director, I often find myself in the position of negotiator. This may be with unions, contractors, vendors or employees. After reading this book, I found that many of the `tips' actually work in the real world. Combined with the book by Jerry Spence How to Argue & Win Every Time: At Home, At Work, In Court, Everywhere, Everyday this book will have a very positive impact on your negotiating skills. . Economics
City Travel Guides > Books > Popular Economics
by: Campbell R McConnell, Stanley L Brue
October 24, 2006
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3B73DORX59ZQM This is one of the better textbooks I have
on the subject. One will have to put the
time in but the book does a
good job explaining concepts.
If I may suggest something that
has helped my studies greatly, a little book called
Don't Like to Read, Then Don't, Listen!: How to
Turn Any Type of Text Into Audio Files That Can
Be Read to You!. I know that many students out
there are like me and would rather listen to
material than have to read it themselves. I use
programs like the one that is reading this review
to have my texts read to me. This is a god send
for me. One can get this title on amazon.

. Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions
City Travel Guides > Books > Popular Economics
by: Dan Ariely
February 19, 2008
Today's mainstream economics is largely based on assumptions of rationality. Ariely shows that such assumptions are completely wrong. This has large implications for running an economic system that achieves a good life for people. People are constantly trying to improve their lives by buying more "stuff," but within very short time periods they find themselves dissatisfied again. The most common measure of economic prosperity used by mainstream economists is the GDP--which essentially counts up what people spend on stuff. Is it any wonder that GDP statistics do not correlate well with quality of life? No economist can afford to miss reading this book. For more on this, see The Loss of Happiness in Market Democracies and Beyond Growth: The Economics of Sustainable ... Read More:
