. Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
City Travel Guides > Books > Women and Business
by: Greg Mortenson, David Oliver Relin
January 30, 2007
Yes, Greg Mortenson has an admirable mission. The Central Asia Institute is wonderful and lovely and education for impoverished children is an important and worthy cause. All the more reason that Mr Mortenson's story should be told well, don't you agree?
I would remind all the reviewers who gush about this book that this page is for reviewing the book 'Three Cups of Tea', not the organization for whose benefit it was written. And while there are few of us who would give Mr Mortenson and the Institute anything but 5 stars, 'Three Cups of Tea', sadly, does not measure up as a novel. Oops, I mean as a work of serious non-fiction. An honest mistake, when at every overworked phrasing, lurid description, infelicitous punctuation, or unashamed ... Read More:

. Go Green, Live Rich: 50 Simple Ways to Save the Earth and Get Rich Trying
City Travel Guides > Books > Women and Business
by: David Bach, Hillary Rosner
April 08, 2008
This book lists 50 ways you can make your life greener. Readers who are already convinced of the need to act ecologically will be its best audience. The ideas are useful, if not deeply innovative. Most of them will indeed help the environment and save you money. And that's a good thing. However, author David Bach (writing with Hillary Rosner) uses many semi-statistical claims without giving enough data or context to lend meaning to his numbers, though they may still encourage true environmental action believers. Some of the book's statistical conclusions are based on fairly unrealistic extrapolations of averages. For example, saying that the average family works two to four months out of the year to drive, insure, fuel and maintain its cars does not seem to capture the fiscal ... Read More:

. Global Woman: Nannies, Maids, and Sex Workers in the New Economy
City Travel Guides > Books > Women and Business
from: Holt Paperbacks
January 01, 2004
Global Woman: Nannies, Maids, and Sex Workers in the New Economy, edited by Barbara Ehrenreich and Arlie Russell Hochschild, Metropolitan Books, Holt & Co, 2002.
Most of us are well aware of the patterns of illegal immigration which bring numerous undocumented workers to the US and other developed countries from less developed countries. Those who work in agriculture, lawn care, and low paying jobs like janitors are well known. This book takes a detailed look at female migrant workers. These include maids, nannies, nurses, those who care for the young and elderly and extends to those kidnaped or sold into the sex slave trade and those who seek marriageable partners in developed countries to obtain visas. A single mother can earn enough in a developed country as a ... Read More:

. Women Don't Ask: The High Cost of Avoiding Negotiation--and Positive Strategies for Change
City Travel Guides > Books > Women and Business
by: Linda Babcock, Sara Laschever
February 27, 2007
Every woman should read this book before asking for a raise. The studies conducted are a harsh, yet empowering reminder that men often get raises, promotions, projects at work, etc. because they are not afraid to request what they think they deserve (or don't deserve!). I've recommended this book for young women just starting out in the work force, as well as seasoned executives at major companies and they have all found it useful. The information is presented in an intelligent, interesting manner- not a self-help or 'business' book, which in my opinion, is a good thing.

. Designed for Success: The 10 Commandments for Women in the Workplace
City Travel Guides > Books > Women and Business
by: Dondi Scumaci
January 02, 2008
OK, I didn't even know this book existed until my job was eliminated, I was sent home on severance and unemployment checks, and am trying to look for a new job.
Because I am home for now, I had the opportunity to watch John Hagee on TV, and saw the interview with Dondi. From the first moment, I KNEW I was hearing from an anointed, professional, and lovely person. I have been in the corporate world since 1985, starting out as a clerk, and now am at the executive assistant level.
I have applied for many wonderful-sounding opportunities, and have been interviewed, but the doors have not opened yet. I am 60 years old, look more like 45-ish, but I am facing something I have never had to face before: my competition is the age of my daughters and grand daughters!! I could tell I needed ...
