Anyone learning photoshop for the first time, or upgrading to CS3, should get this book and read it through. Even if you are proficient in previous versions, this book opens up new concepts and introduces the reader to new tools, not available in previous versions of Adobe Photoshop. This book will truly increase productivity and improve quality.

If you want a completely non-technical approach to shooting better (great?) shots in various common senarios (eg outdoors, weddings, flowers, sports, etc), this is exactly the right book for you. It's a short read, but you'll have a hard time remembering all the valuable things that are in this book!

One of the reviews mentions here mention how the author uses some weird humor in chapter intros, but don't let that distract you. The author admits he wrote most of those intros while smashed, and I believe it. If you want, just ignore the chapter infos. The tips are definitely very valuable.

As the cover suggests, this is mainly for people with dslr's, so you're not going to get the most out of this book unless you already ... Read More:

I ordered this because it was the only Lightroom 2 book available at the time. I have read the Kelby books in the past and feel they are more solution oriented. This Adobe book is more about how to use the program and does a very good job.

To me a review is most meaningful when you know a little something about the person writing the review. I have been an avid amateur photographer since the late 1970's and have been selling my work since 2004. Photography isn't my day job, but it does provide a welcome supplement. I shot with a Canon 1D Mark II Professional Digital SLR from 2003 until May of 2008. I recently switched to a Nikon D3 and while the files do have a different look directly out of the camera, in the end both systems provide wonderful images once they have been worked in post process. When I last wrote a review I was doing all most all of my post processing work in Photoshop, but my workflow has evolved significantly since the introduction of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

I bought this book because of the title but I have to be honest the examples are not very clear. I look for a book that has clearly explained examples that lead you to a final product. This book doesn't even tell you which examples to open for each chapter. Most books say open the file (and gives the file name) then it walks you through each step explaining what is being done as you go. This book doesn't do that as evidenced in the chapter about layers where is doesn't clearly explain which files to open or what to do with them to get to the final outcome.

This book sets out the principles for composition and visual construction of photos brilliantly. A variety of shots for each topic are shown, explaining why the 'bad' ones don't look quite right and for the 'good' photos the secret to the composition is explained.

First the bottom line: I've had this book a few weeks now and I like it a lot. It has proved to be exactly the book I needed and it's small flaws don't keep me from both enjoying it and finding enormously useful. Well worth the money.

Who is the book for?
This is NOT a book for someone who is brand new to photo editing, nor would I recommend it for someone who is new to PSE. In fact, the author makes it quite clear that he's not going to tell you, for example, what the erasure tool does, he's going to tell you how to use it to get something accomplished. Also, if you're looking for a reference book on PSE I'd look elsewhere, the book's organization doesn't lend itself to that, though the index is good and the table of contents excellent ... This book is fairly comprehensive with regard to content on enhancing photos using photoshop techniques.
I definitely would recommend this guide for both beginning and advanced photoshop CS3 users.
