While this may be an excellent reference for experienced Linux users, it will be of very limited use for beginners or those who use Linux through a graphical interface. It is also specifically directed towards Fedora. It would be helpful if your descriptive blurb on the book revealed these two facts.

I purchased this book a few days ago, and as soon as I read the first chapter, I realized that I needed to read the entire book as quickly as possible. This is a wonderful book, and parts of it truely invoked a state of "nerdvana" in me!

First, I will say that the information in this book is tightly packed. There is no unnecessary verbage, and the writing is direct, to the point and understandable. There is a high ratio of technical content to noise, and this greatly contributed to my enjoyment of the book. I bought this book (3rd edition) at a modest price from a really great Amazon vendor, Jennifer's Attic. However, it is by far the worst textbook that I have ever used in my life. Simply put, it is replete with errors, omissions and useless repetition. I'd bet a dozen glazed donuts that the four authors who compiled this book have not recently gone through the book's one hundred plus activities and projects to check for errors and omissions. It's a required text for a graduate Computer Forensics course at a state university where I'm pursuing a computer science certificate to add to my 4 year Industrial Technology degree. I am a network engineer (mainly voice and data) and recently had to start gearing up for ASA's and FWSM's.
This is a great book for engineers who need to get familiar to the security suite and basic configurations.

I now need to start readying on security guide lines and procedures which this book helped with the foundation of.

I just passed the 70-624 delpoying vista and office 2007. I could not find a book that solely focused on this exam. But this resource kit, not only provides all of that information, but more than you need.

The hardest thing for me was trying to figure out what I needed for the exam. But trust me, all of it was there. The book was helpful because it explained the concepts thoroughly and took its time. I had to use some other test prep just to get a feel for the kind of questions that were on the exam, but I could not have studied without this book. I cant stand reading everything on technet, because the computer screen glare works my eyes. Give me an old fashioned book and let me work at the pages. Good book!

I've been in IT for over 25 years, and in that time I've read a lot of technical books. "File System Forensic Analysis" is not only the best book I have read on computer forensics, it's probably the best technical work in ANY field I've ever read. It's thoroughly researched, clearly written, and contains virtually no fluff. The numerous rave reviews it has received are well-deserved.

My only quibble is the short, but seemingly gratuitous section on hexadecimal and decimal arithmetic. If you're ready for this book, you'll already know this stuff. But, that's only a few pages in a book that's otherwise packed with real substance.

"EnCE The Official EnCase Certified Examiner Study Guide(2nd Edition)" is not only an excellent study guide for taking the EnCE test, but is a an excellent book for those who, like myself, cannot afford to go to all of the basic and advance classes that Guidance Software offers. In just about every chapter I learned many new features about EnCase that I never realized existed. If you are now using EnCase Version 6 you definitely want this book!

And no, I am not anyway connected to Mr. Bunting, but am looking for the day I can personally meet him and thank him for publishing this learning tool.

I wish the author had just put the info on a free website. The book is just a document, a pamphlet as another reviewer mentioned. I feel a bit ripped-off. In fact, in one place the author actually says "before proceeding, ensure that the firmware ... falls within the range of versions supported by this document." He is referring to the book but calling it a document. I think he intended it to be just a document and O'Reilly convinced him to make it a book so O'Reilly could make some money.

As far as technical material, it's all good and well-written. There are a few cases where it appears the O'Reilly editor might have cluelessly changed a sentence, but those cases are rare compared to some professionally-edited books. There are some typos, even ... Read More:

I finally picked up this book last year and throughoughly enjoyed it. I keep referring to it because the examples build up to the point of qualified proof of concept. The examples also are different enough from the other ones that are easy to find with Google, so between the two you get a complete view of the vulnerable issue.

The book's title should be obvious enough; this is NOT a book of defenses. However, if you understand these attacks you will be better equiped to deal with them when they happen. This book is no replacement for hands-on training in person with a qualified instructor such as at the SANS Institute, but it is an excellent supplement.
