I originally read Dostoyevsky's Crime & Punishment in high school over 30 years ago and remember being impressed by his deep character development and always wanted to read more of his books and never got around to it until now. I noticed that the book was available in audio book format and that it had decent ratings so I gave this a try. It turned out to be a wonderful month listening to this book on my commute.

The reader is Frederick Davidson, who I have listened to before in some other classics. Initially his voice is a bit grating, but I soon got used to it and it seemed perfect for the different characters. He has the ability to sound sarcastic; which worked perfectly for the father. The story of a 'frightful little girl', whose point of view changes as she discovers the secrets of her new surroundings.
A well-written story at times, but it definitely had its draggy moments. It seemed to promise more than it delivered(I expected more of a fantasy tale, along the lines of 'The Chronicles of Narnia'.)
The characters were well-developed, though Colin kind of took over what had been 'Mary's story' toward the end.
Perhaps not the best 'classic children's lit' out there, but it shows how life was at the time it was written, and it's best not to give up on it because it's not entirely 'PC'. Judge for yourself.

Fat Charlie was dubbed so by his dad when just a chubby child. Unfortunately, even though he shed the pounds the name stuck. Many years later Fat Charlie is living an unremarkable life, with a crappy job and a girlfriend who insists on making him "wait until marriage". When Charlie's dad dies he learns some amazingly unbelieveable things and his boring life is forever changed.

This one has a lot of wit and was just offbeat enough to hold my attention. Charlie is an every-guy sort of character who is easy to like as he bumbles his way through some very odd changes in his life. This was the first book that I read from the series, and it drew me in like nothing else I'd ever read before. The characters are captivating, especially Bonnie, who I instantly fell in love with. The Candlestone opened up a door for me to enjoy a series that quickly became my favorite, and not only that, it led me to Bryan Davis' fan forum where I made lifelong friends, and was able to meet the man himself. Through my friendship with Bryan Davis I have learned tons about life, and God, and am eternally grateful for his passion and his obedience to God.
