Garr Reynolds has succinctly grasped a pernicious nettle and dislodged a few hoary myths about effective communication in his new book presentationzen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery. This book is terrific to find out what the Mac can do, and how to do it. I've had the Mac and the book for about a month now, and it's really helped me bridge the gap from disgruntled XP owner to delighted Mac owner. It's 900 pages and it has a good index to find the answer to specific things you want to learn to do. The author really knows the Mac and writes in a tutorial fashion, making it easy for the modest to moderately competent user to understand. The book is far superior to using the Apple web site to learn to do Mac "stuff". With the book, you can mark the pages, and you don't need to be online, unlike the skimpy online tutorials.

Highly recommended, if you want to get more from your Mac, and do more.

I opened this book today for some help with selection. You know, when you use masks or the quick selection tool to isolate an area to change something limited to that area. It doesn't exist!

Furthermore, Scott writes in a jocular style in which he explains things by telling stories, as if he were speaking to a child. I don't want that, I just want straight information which I can quickly scan or search for answers. If you want to be amused, this is your book. If you just want Photoshop information, look elsewhere.

This is a thick, heavy book, hard to hold, worth the trouble. It doesn't solve every problem but it comes close, and offers links for more insight and details. If you are looking for a way to understand what you are working on, for a foundation from which to be creative, good book.

If you plan to write for Mac OS X, and have some programming experience, this book is a MUST HAVE. This is by far the best introductory book I have ever read on any language.

If you DO NOT have programming experience, I would still recommend this book. There are some spots where the logic might be hard to grasp, but Aaron Hillegass walks you through it.

In either case, but more so for beginners, I would also recommend Programming in Objective-C (Developer's Library). The less experience you have, the more strongly I would suggest reading this book first. It will walk you through the basics of straight Objective-C and then start you off using frameworks in OS X.
