. The Screwtape Letters
City Travel Guides > Books > Comic
by: C. S. Lewis
February 06, 2001
I don't know how well this great book translates to agnostic readers, but for me it was a very enlightening and concrete way to understand what it means to try to be a good man in a world of temptation.
In keeping with the time period, I believe it was Winston Churchill who said "All evil needs to triumph is for good men to do nothing". In the Screwtape Letters the senior tempter, tells his apprentice, it is just as affective to get a man to stare into a fire until it turns to ash, as to get him to commit some great sin, because either keeps him from doing what he should. I wonder what Mr. Lewis would have thought of digital cable television? I am as guilty as anyone of staring at that box instead of doing good.
So here's ... Read More:

. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
City Travel Guides > Books > Comic
by: Michael Chabon
August 25, 2001
Kavalier and Clay are Jewish cousins, Clay (morphed from Klayman) a short New Yorker crippled by polio, Kavalier a tall brooding escapee from Europe just before Hitler locked the gates and opened the extermination lines. The day after Kavalier's surprising arrival in New York, after his amazing escape from Europe via Japan and San Francisco, Sam and Joe launch the multi-million dollar earning Escapist comic book line in a combination of daring, talent, and brinksmanship bluffing.
The rest of the book is the story of how they survive success and conquer failure. The book reads quickly, with only an uncomfortable homosexuality subplot to ruin the enjoyment of the interaction between the cousins and the bubbling potboiling excitement of the early days ... Read More:

. Remember Me?
City Travel Guides > Books > Comic
by: Sophie Kinsella
February 26, 2008
I cannot say enough good, hearwarming things about this book, "Do You Remember Me." Not only is it a page turner, you will be rolling oon the floor laughing at Lexy, the main character. Just like her "Shopoholic Series," all of her books so vividly capture her characters, and continuously made me laugh and relate, in so many ways, I had to stop and realize she wasn't writing about me. She has several movie deals in the works about her books, and I hope, like me" you will be excited and full of anticipation for them to be in theatres as soon as possible. Thanks, Sophie, for another masterpiece! Like me, you will be pulling for these herions to pull through and have a happy ending!

. Then We Came to the End: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Comic
by: Joshua Ferris
February 26, 2008
I'm about a fifth of the way through this book, and I'm having a really tough time getting through it. Like many of the other reviewers, I was impressed by the praise it was getting and was expecting a quick, entertaining read. Instead, reading it has dragged on for 2 weeks (I actually stopped and read Generation Kill, which is the same size, in 2 days in between). A lot of the negative reviewers have mentioned the Office in comparison, and I think that highlights how poorly the characters are developed in this book. On the Office, Michael is a massive douche 80% of the time, but the other 20% is used humanize him, make him sympathetic, and provide insights on why he is the way he is. As a result, you care about the character, and his bumbling comes off funny and less anger ... Read More:

. The Bible Salesman: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Comic
by: Clyde Edgerton
August 11, 2008
I had the feeling that this is basically a 80-100 page novelette expanded into a 240-page novel: the heart is good, but it's been bulked out. There's some fine writing, particularly with the naive Bible salesman linking up with a professional car thief (and worse). But this part is fleshed out with flashbacks to the Henry Dampier's (the salesman) youth. The flashbacks are interesting, but they do not add significantly to the main thread of the tale. I found that I wanted to get back to 1950 to see what would happen next with the salesman and the car thief: the flashbacks were a distraction.
The other problem I have is that we need to accept Henry's belief that the car thief is actually a FBI agent who needs Henry's help in retrieving automobiles. The car thief is a con man and a ... Read More:

. Supreme Courtship
City Travel Guides > Books > Comic
by: Christopher Buckley
September 03, 2008
In his latest novel, Christopher Buckley trains his trademark "outside insider's insight" on the Supreme Court to parody the political and personal undercurrents shaping how the Court works. The result is political satire at its best - a fun house mirror image of the inner workings of Washington that succeeds because it starts with a deep insight into the real world and then deftly distorts it to highlight the humor (and sometimes ridiculousness) of it all.
In simple overview, Supreme Courtship tells the tale of an unpopular President who overcomes a self-interested Senator's opposition to his Supreme Court nominees by nominating a wildly popular television judge to serve on the Court. Underlying that simple story is a series of finely-drawn caricatures and "ripped-from-the-headlines" sub ... Read More:
